About The Position

The Department of Social Services (DSS), which includes the New York City Human Resources Administration (HRA) and the Department of Homeless Services (DHS), is hiring one Social Worker for the Office of Adult Protective Services (APS). APS provides mandated social, legal, and protective services to adults aged 18 and older who, because of mental or physical impairments, cannot meet essential needs or protect themselves from harm, neglect, maltreatment, or financial exploitation, and lack someone able and willing to assist them responsibly. Under supervision, with some latitude for independent judgment and decision-making, the APS Social Worker provides psychosocial services in one of the seven APS borough offices. Working with borough office directors, supervisors, and caseworkers, the Social Worker serves individuals, families, and groups of adults or children using casework, group work, and community organization methods. The role involves consultation on complex cases, clinical input to multidisciplinary teams, client assessment and service coordination, collaboration with medical facilities, and support for treatment plans and legal documents related to Article 81 court orders. Applicants must be permanent in the Social Worker civil service title. A person hired provisionally must take and pass the civil service examination when it becomes available to remain eligible for continued employment. The position requires a master's degree in social work from an accredited school and a New York State LMSW or LCSW license within one year of appointment; the license must be maintained throughout employment. Failure to obtain the license within one year extends the probationary period by six months, and failure to obtain it within 18 months of service results in termination. The schedule is 9–5 flex.
