About The Position

This position performs duties and tasks with an emphasis on vegetation control on County right-of-way and County owned property. It is anticipated that the vegetation control work and related activities will occur year around. This position is responsible for the development and implementation the County’s Vegetation program. This position plans and schedules staff, resources, budgeting, review and purchasing of equipment, supplies, and materials to accomplish the spray program. Performs safe, efficient, and skilled operation of herbicide and snow and ice pretreatment brine application. This position may be required to operate a mower during times when weather conditions do not allow for spraying. In the winter months, the position will perform duties and tasks related to snow and ice control on County Roads and County owned Property. Work will require the employees of this class to exercise considerable initiative and judgment in the completion of assignments. Work is normally performed in the cab of assigned equipment or outdoors in all weather conditions. Due to the nature of the position and business need, the position may require scheduled work activities outside standard work hours. Performs daily maintenance activities on associated county road vegetation/snow & ice control. This position will also assist with road and bridge maintenance activities as required; tasks including manual labor, flagging, mowing and traffic control. Position subject to call-out for emergencies.

Requirements

  • Possess and maintain a valid Driver’s License.
  • Possess and maintain a valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License with Tanker and Airbrake endorsements.
  • Possess and maintain a valid Washington State Public Applicators License with an Aquatics Endorsement.
  • Mathematical skills sufficient for substance mixing, equipment calibration, evaluating product costs, and other calculations pertinent to the vegetation control program.
  • Knowledge of proper/safe use and experience with tools and equipment common to vegetation control trade.
  • Skilled in planning and scheduling of manpower, budgeting, review and purchasing of equipment, supplies, materials to accomplish the spray program.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent.
  • Regular computer keyboard work is required.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and direct the work activities of staff assigned to vegetation/snow & ice control activities, ensuring that all work is performed in a safe, efficient, and cooperative manner, in accordance with the program and department procedures.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction plans, specifications, and survey markings.
  • Maintain accurate and timely department records in accordance with regulation and department procedures such as spraying schedules, update Safety Data Sheet (SDS) records.
  • Collaborate in the development and implementation of the Public Works vegetation/snow & ice control program.
  • Coordinate vegetation/snow & ice control activities or collaboration with the area Roads Supervisors and Foreman.
  • Stay up to date on regulations and vegetation/snow & ice control news and developments in order to make recommendations of the spray application equipment, substances, and practices.
  • Operate spray trucks, hydro seeder, brush cutters, loaders, forklifts, as well as other spray and vegetation/snow & ice equipment.
  • Purchase, transport, store, mix and apply various pesticides, herbicides, fertilizers, and seed, ensuring proper application according to manufacturer’s instructions and department standards, and its applicability to the area and plant life.
  • Receive, evaluate, investigate, and resolve complaints and inquires pertaining to the vegetation control program.
  • Prepare bids and order materials for spraying and hydro-seeding.
  • Perform regular safety and maintenance inspections of equipment.
  • Attend and participate in regular staff meetings as required.
  • Contribute ideas for the improvement and efficiency of general operations.
  • Actively participate in job related and required training.
  • Attend training classes, schools and seminars to stay up to date on modern technical skills and knowledge, compliance and other job-related issues.
  • Attain and maintain required certifications.
  • Train, oversee and guide new or supporting personnel, as well as collaborate in the effective implementation of operation and maintenance programs and procedures.
  • Collaborate with other Public Works divisions and outside agencies during projects and emergencies.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.
