About The Position

This is a six-month fellowship program for Advanced Practice Nurses (APNs) to develop expertise in the recognition, evaluation, and management of acute neurologic insults. These insults include, but are not limited to, traumatic brain injury, stroke, refractory status epilepticus, autoimmune and demyelinating disorders, CNS infections, metabolic and neuromuscular disorders, and neurologic complications of critical illness. The training involves consult service in the ICU, as well as rotations in neurosurgery, pediatric critical care, rehabilitation, and adult neuroscience/stroke. The Advanced Practice Provider (APP) works within a multidisciplinary clinical team to gain knowledge in Neuro Critical Care, learn evidence-based practice through research and academic activities, and support nursing and leadership to advance the nursing profession. The role is unique to the APN specialty area and aligns with individual credentialing and privileging through the Medical Staff Office.

Requirements

  • License to practice in the state of Illinois
  • Successfully complete the Lurie credentialing process
  • Master’s degree or higher from an accredited school appropriate for certification as a Nurse Practitioner Physician Assistant. (CNS certification is not acceptable if hired after January 1, 2010)
  • Licensure in the State of Illinois as an APRN/PA is required.
  • Clinical privileges through credentialing by the Medical Staff Office achieved within 90 days of hire.
  • Practices under the direction of advanced practice provider or physician providers until fully credentialed and privileged
  • Basic Life Support certification required.
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support certification and/or other specialty certification is required in some areas within 6 months of employment.
  • Any other certification required for specialty area.
  • Demonstrates excellent interpersonal skills, basic computer skills, and strong verbal and written communication skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Two (2) years of relevant clinical experience is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provides expert clinical care, education, consultation, advocacy research, leadership and mentorship.
  • Manages primary, acute and chronic health problems through comprehensive history and physical examination assessment and diagnosis. This may include palliative and end of life care.
  • Orders, performs and interprets diagnostic and therapeutic tests and procedures.
  • Prescribes pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic interventions, and performs other therapeutic or corrective measures to treat illness and improve health status.
  • Promotes the advancement of the nursing profession at Lurie Children's and the community-at-large. This may include publication, participation in professional organizations and providing educational support to the nursing staff.
  • Collaborates and coordinates care with medical team to deliver evidenced-based care and establish best practices in clinical care.
  • Participates in research design, implementation and interpretation.
  • Meets the Medical Staffs Allied Health Practitioners core measures of performance related to patient care, medical knowledge, practice based learning and improvement, interpersonal communication skills, professionalism, and system based practice.
  • Performs job functions adhering to service principles with customer service focus of innovation, service excellence and teamwork to provide the highest quality care and service to our patients, families, co-workers and others.
