About The Position

The Apheresis RN Senior practices at the level of an expert practitioner of nursing. The RN will work with MSRH, the Mays Cancer Center Apheresis unit, and stem cell transplant and cellular therapy (SCTCT) teams. The RN at this level demonstrates expertise in caring for patients with multiple and complex problems. In addition to demonstrating clinical leadership on the unit, the RN Senior serves as a resource and system-wide consultant to staff and participates in endeavors to increase nursing knowledge. The Registered Nurse IV may function as a back to the clinical leader. Works with the cellular therapy lab personnel team, in addition to the SCTCT infusion center, coordinators, and the rest of the SCTCT team. Ensures protocols and practices, workflows, ensuring compliance with department, affiliate, SCTCT unit, policies and procedures, regulations, Foundation for the Accreditation and Cellular Therapy, and system-wide standards and applicable laws are followed by the team. This role may cross over to inpatients to perform stem cell collections or therapeutic apheresis.

  • Sufficient proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing the English language necessary to perform the essential functions of this job, especially with regard to activities impacting patient or employee safety or security.
  • Strong assessment, organizational and problem-solving skill as evidenced by capacity to prioritize multiple tasks and role components
  • Ability to function independently and exercise judgment in interactions with physicians, interprofessional care team and patients and their families
  • Uses critical thinking skills and clinical judgment to work autonomously as defined by the Nurse Practice Act
  • The promotion of expert professional practice by evaluating his/her own practice and evaluating patient outcomes
  • The ability to provide others in the profession with expert Peer Review to improve practice.
  • Ability to demonstrate in-depth knowledge with the ability to use this knowledge in complex varied situations of stem cell collection, collection for CAR T cellular therapy, apheresis concepts and practices.
  • Write, develop, update, edit, MSRH/Mays Cancer Center nursing and FACT policies.
  • Ability to interact respectfully with other employees, professional staff and/or external contacts to offer ideas, identify issues, obtain information or deliver services.
  • Efficiently uses time to identify short and long term priorities; fulfills realistic goals; and responds to schedules of others
  • All required certifications must remain current and valid throughout employment.
  • Ability to serve as a preceptor and a mentor by fostering a teaching environment.
  • Position eligible for preceptor premium pay with completion of preceptor education and leader approval.
  • Bachelor's of Science in Nursing required
  • Texas RN or Compact RN License Required at time of hire
  • RQI BLS is required within 30 days of hire and must be renewed quarterly.
  • This position may require the ability to maintain the security and integrity of UT San Antonio and its infrastructure per Texas EO-GA-48.

Responsibilities

  • Assists Nurse Manager by providing assigned staff with performance feedback and opportunity to set professional goals.
  • Models and promotes behaviors that effectively give continual feedback to staff and colleagues.
  • Integrates best practice standards regarding retention of staff in all aspects of practice.
  • Develops, implements, and evaluates new and creative approaches to meeting goals.
  • Leads participates in and promotes performance improvement initiatives that focus on identified patient safety or quality of care opportunities.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
