About The Position

Performs therapeutic and donor apheresis procedures, ensuring safe and efficient care delivery. Requires advanced clinical judgement, technical proficiency with apheresis equipment, and advanced critical thinking skills. Works under the direction of the Apheresis Medical Provider, as part of an interdisciplinary team. Apheresis nurses rotate on-call responsibilities for emergency procedures that occur outside of regular clinic hours.

Requirements

  • Active RN license in Ohio, required.
  • Minimum 3 years of clinical nursing experience (critical care, oncology, hematology, or dialysis preferred).
  • Proficiency with apheresis equipment and technology
  • Strong venipuncture and central line management skills
  • Critical thinking and rapid decision-making in emergent situations.
  • Excellent patient assessment and monitoring abilities.
  • Effective communication and patient education skills.
  • Attention to detail and commitment to accurate documentation.
  • Team collaboration and interdisciplinary coordination.
  • Adaptability to changing patient condition, needs, or procedural requirements.
  • Knowledge of infection prevention, safety, and regulatory standards.
  • Knowledge of regulatory standards and quality improvement processes.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing, preferred.
  • Certification in apheresis nursing (e.g., Qualification in Apheresis) or willingness to obtain when eligible
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), preferred.
  • Experience with apheresis procedures, preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Perform apheresis procedures (e.g., therapeutic plasma exchange, red cell exchange, stem cell collection, leukocyte reduction, and photopheresis).
  • Assess and monitor patients’ clinical status before, during, and after procedures; respond promptly to changes in clinical condition or adverse reactions; escalate clinical concerns to the medical provider.
  • Operate, troubleshoot, and maintain apheresis machines and related equipment, ensuring adherence to infection control and safety standards.
  • Collaborate with physicians, lab personnel, blood bank personnel, and the care team to coordinate procedures, review orders, and ensure continuity of care.
  • Document patient assessments, procedure details, and outcomes accurately in the electronic medical record.
  • Assess, establish, and manage venous access, ensuring patency, proper function, and infection prevention throughout the procedure.
  • Educate patients and families about apheresis procedures, potential side effects, and post-procedural care.
  • Participate in quality assurance activities, competency assessments, and continuing education to maintain current knowledge of apheresis best practices.
  • Maintain supplies, prepare equipment, and comply with all regulatory guidelines.
  • Assist in training new team members.
