Under supervision of the Supervisor of Anatomic Pathology and direction from Pathologists and Cytotechnologist, receives and processes cytology and histology specimens for the diagnosis of cancer and other diseases. Performs clerical and receiving functions associated with the timely, accurate, reproducible reporting of results for cytology and histology specimens. Responsible for specimen accessioning and preparation including but not limited to fine needle aspirations, WANG procedure, ThinPrep, and body fluid specimens for direct smears, cytospin, staining, and/or cell block preparation. Cytology specimen preparation includes assisting the PA or Pathologist at the time of grossing, monitoring decalcification of tissues, processing bone marrow specimens, recording cassette numbers and special processing instructions, and loading the tissue processor. Performs rapid diagnosis procedures including frozen sectioning of tissue specimens. Also performs clerical functions, sanitation of preparation areas, and related duties to assist the pathologists and cytotechnologists with the production of high quality slides. Performs routine histologic procedures including cutting and staining patient samples.
