Under supervision of the Supervisor of Anatomic Pathology and direction from Pathologists and Cytotechnologist, the AP Lab Assistant receives and processes cytology and histology specimens for the diagnosis of cancer and other diseases. The role involves performing clerical and receiving functions to ensure timely, accurate, and reproducible reporting of results for these specimens. Key responsibilities include specimen accessioning and preparation, covering procedures such as fine needle aspirations, WANG procedure, ThinPrep, and body fluid specimens for direct smears, cytospin, staining, and/or cell block preparation. The assistant also aids the PA or Pathologist during grossing, monitors tissue decalcification, processes bone marrow specimens, records cassette numbers and special processing instructions, and loads the tissue processor. Additionally, the position performs rapid diagnosis procedures like frozen sectioning of tissue specimens, handles clerical tasks, maintains sanitation of preparation areas, and assists pathologists and cytotechnologists in producing high-quality slides. Routine histologic procedures, including cutting and staining patient samples, are also part of the role.
