About The Position

Under the supervision of the Health Director, this role performs general duties related to ensuring the safety of all citizens from stray, loose, injured, or unlicensed animals. This includes responding to complaints, impounding animals, investigating animal bites, maintaining the animal shelter, and performing related tasks to ensure public safety and animal welfare.

Requirements

  • Ability to communicate effectively with the public.
  • Ability to carry up to 75 pounds.
  • Dexterity: Picking, pinching, typing, or otherwise working, primarily with fingers rather than with the whole hand as in handling.
  • Handling: Picking, holding, or otherwise working, primarily with the whole hand.
  • Visual ability: sufficient to effectively operate office equipment including copier, computer, etc.; and to read and write reports, correspondence, instructions, etc.
  • Hearing ability: sufficient to hold a conversation with other individuals both in person and over a telephone; and to hear recording on transcription device.
  • Speaking ability: sufficient to communicate effectively with other individuals in person and over the telephone.
  • Mental Acuity: Ability to make rational decisions through sound logic and deductive processes.
  • Talking: Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word including those activities in which they must convey detailed or important spoken instructions to other workers accurately, loudly, or quickly.
  • Repetitive Motion: Substantial movements (motions) of the wrist, hands, and/or fingers.
  • Walking: Moving about on foot to accomplish tasks, particularly for long distances or moving from one work site to another.

Responsibilities

  • Answer complaints and calls for assistance regarding stray, loose, unlicensed, and injured animals.
  • Impound animals and issue citations when needed.
  • Investigate animal bites and animals suspicious of carrying rabies.
  • Maintain the animal shelter, providing food and water for animals.
  • Secure rodents and stray domestic animals; dispose of roadkill.
  • Release animals from the shelter in accordance with prescribed procedures.
  • Destroy animals at the shelter in accordance with prescribed procedures.
  • Complete necessary forms and documentation.
  • Operate tractor, mower, and hand tools while cutting weeds and grass, trimming trees, and removing debris from City properties.
  • Perform simple maintenance on equipment and vehicles.
  • Operate insect control equipment.
  • Communicate with the public.
  • Communicate with City and County Attorneys and Judges about cases.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
