About The Position

This position provides animal control, welfare, and safety services and enforces county animal licensing and control ordinances. The work is performed under the supervision of the Field Services Lieutenant, but considerable latitude is granted for the exercise of independent judgement and initiative. The principal duties of this class are performed in an outdoor environment and include exposure to inclement weather and wild and domestic animals, with potential exposure to animal bites.

Requirements

  • Learn and apply animal control and welfare methods, policies, procedures, equipment, and objectives
  • Operate a motor vehicle
  • Operate specialized animal safety and control equipment, including traps, catchpoles, nets, tranquilizer guns, radios, and related equipment
  • Apply dispute mediation and resolution techniques
  • Prepare and maintain reports, records, documents, enforcement records, letters, and related information files
  • Establish and maintain working relationships with other county employees, law enforcement agents and agencies, and the public
  • Idaho driver’s license
  • Canyon County resident required
  • Minimum of 21 years of age
  • Ability to obtain certification to perform euthanasia
  • Must successfully complete a background investigation including a polygraph examination
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent required
  • Clear speech with or without an accommodation, to effectively convey detailed or important instructions or ideas accurately, loudly and/or quickly
  • Sufficient clarity of hearing with or without reasonable accommodation to enable the employee to hear average or normal conversations and receive ordinary information
  • Visual acuity, with or without an accommodation, to read instructions, review and organize documents
  • Requires sufficient personal mobility and physical reflexes, which permits the employee to function in a general office environment to accomplish tasks
  • Ability to lift/move 75 lbs. regularly and up to 100 lbs. occasionally

Nice To Haves

  • One year experience in animal control or related field preferred
  • Any equivalent combination of experience and training may be considered

Responsibilities

  • Address various animal-related complaints, including noise, abuse, welfare concerns, bites, strays, and other incidents
  • Issue citations, impound animals, and respond to related incidents
  • Ensure compliance with county animal licensing and control regulations
  • Perform tasks related to the control, safety and welfare of animals
  • Inform the public of county animal control and welfare
  • Work with law enforcement and other local and state agencies on complaints and incidents
  • Ensure injured animals receive necessary veterinary attention
  • Assist with the euthanasia of injured, unclaimed, or surrendered animals, following applicable policies and procedures
  • Keep animal care equipment, including trucks, cages, traps, and related gear, in good working order
  • Issue and collect live animal traps as needed
  • Maintain accurate records, documentation, and correspondence on enforcement actions
  • Performs all work duties and activities following county and Sheriff’s office policies, procedures, and safety practices
  • All other duties as assigned
