About The Position

Riverton City is seeking a full-time position as an Animal Control Officer - Level I or Level II, in the Police Department. This position performs patrol, apprehension, and animal care duties related to enforcing local animal control laws and ordinances. Performs labor, technical, and shelter services to ensure the city is free from animals at large that create hazards to public health, public safety, or public order. Assists with enforcement of city codes and ordinances.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • 1+ years' experience working with animals is required.
  • Must possess a valid Utah Driver's License with a good driving record.

Nice To Haves

  • 1+ years' experience working in code enforcement-related law enforcement is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Patrols city streets and public areas for animals at large.
  • Takes into possession and impounds stray animals as defined in the Riverton City animal control ordinance within jurisdictional limits and transports them to the city animal shelter or other approved facilities.
  • Provides daily care for animals housed at the shelter, including feeding, watering, cleaning, and sanitizing kennels, cages, and equipment, and monitoring animal health and behavior.
  • Maintains humane, sanitary, and safe conditions within the animal shelter in compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and best practices.
  • Processes the release of impounded animals to rightful owners in accordance with city ordinances, including verification of ownership, documentation, and fee collection when applicable.
  • Ensures deceased animals are handled and disposed of appropriately and in accordance with applicable regulations.
  • Participates in an on-call rotation and responds to after-hours calls involving animal control and shelter-related emergencies.
  • Appears in court to testify in support of the city's position regarding violations of city ordinances and applicable state codes.
  • Prepares and maintains accurate reports documenting investigations, enforcement actions, animal impoundments, shelter activities, adoptions, and releases.
  • Assists other city departments in investigating and enforcing violations of city ordinances and applicable state codes.
  • Maintains files, databases, and records related to investigations, animal control activities, shelter operations, and enforcement actions.
  • Will be a backup for Code Enforcement.
  • Performs other related duties and responsibilities as assigned.
