About The Position

The Ontario SPCA and Humane Society is a registered charity with nearly 150 years of operation, dedicated to providing care, comfort, and compassion to animals in need across Ontario. The organization values all animals and advocates for their respectful and kind treatment, striving to keep pets and families together through various community support services. This Animal Care Worker (ACW) position is funded through the Canada Summer Jobs (CSJ) program, which supports youth aged 15 to 30 by providing paid summer work experience and opportunities to develop job market skills. ACWs are responsible for the day-to-day care of sheltered animals, including feeding, providing enrichment, exercise, and other engagement activities. They ensure a healthy environment for all residents through routine grooming, housekeeping, and disinfection accountabilities such as kennel cleaning and laundry. While essential animal care and associated activities are the primary focus, customer service and related client administrative duties are paramount to the shelter and the success of this position.

Requirements

  • Be aged between 15 and 30 years old on the start date of the job
  • Have a valid Social Insurance Number (SIN)
  • Be a Canadian citizen, a permanent resident of Canada, or a person who has been granted refugee status in Canada
  • International students and other temporary residents of Canada are not eligible to apply for positions funding through the Canada Summer Jobs program

Responsibilities

  • Performing care and enrichment for our animals including, feeding, exercising, playing and/or other engagement activities
  • Ensuring a healthy environment through general house-keeping, disinfection protocols, laundry duties and kennel cleaning
  • Supporting animal physical health by performing supervised vaccinations, seeking RVT advice and general bathing and grooming duties
  • Animal handling including: lifting, carrying and restraining when necessary
  • Participates in the transfer of animals to vet clinic as required
  • Maintaining client records, recording information and notifying a supervisor of any potential health concerns
  • Immerse self in the culture and goals of the centre/organization by actively promoting the centre via social media channels and participation in a variety of fundraising initiatives
  • Customer service and related client administrative duties
