About The Position

The Division of Animal Resources within the Emory National Biomedical Research Center at Emory University’s Field Station in Lawrenceville, Georgia, is seeking an Animal Care Technician IV to join our team. This role combines the responsibilities of an Animal Care Technician and a Veterinary Technician and requires the ability to work independently with minimal supervision. The position is scheduled exclusively on weekends and consists of overnight shifts from Friday, 4:00 PM–2:00 AM; Saturday, 4:00 PM–7:00 AM (overnight into Sunday); and Sunday, 4:00 PM–7:00 AM (overnight into Monday). Applicants must be available to work the full overnight weekend schedule. The ideal candidate should be highly motivated, extremely dependable, reliable, detail-oriented, and possess a positive attitude and passion for animal care in a research environment. The Animal Care Technician will be a team player who is willing to learn on the job and collaborate with coworkers and other departments at the facility. The Animal Care Technician will work to ensure the highest quality of husbandry and care. Efficient and effective communication skills with co-workers, the management team, PI’s, research staff, students, and other support services is also required. Collaborate. Innovate. Serve. Requirements

A high school diploma or equivalent and five years of animal husbandry/care experience, OR certification as Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) and four years of animal husbandry/care, OR six years of animal husbandry/care experience.
In positions involving breeding management, this position will require a Bachelor's degree and one year of experience working with laboratory animals.
Must have a working understanding of principles of animal breeding, genetics, and behavior of one or more relevant species.
The ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
May require a valid Georgia driver's license and an insurable driving record.

Responsibilities

Participates in general and specialized animal care and feeding and may administer medications and diets following veterinary protocol.
May provide cage-wash duties.
Monitors and records health and physical condition of animals, may provide health observations and treatments under veterinary guidance.
Notifies professional personnel of conditions warranting attention.
Monitors and records the condition and security of research animals (may include after hours).
May monitor the security and maintenance of facilities, grounds, vehicles, and equipment; follows the appropriate procedures for handling intruders, trespassers, or unauthorized activities.
Observes the general condition of animal housing and notifies appropriate staff of the need for repairs or modifications.
May monitor temperature, light, humidity, and water conditions to ensure a safe and comfortable environment.
May provide specialized services such as breeding management, aquatic care and management, research support, and training of animal resources employees.
Employees in this classification may be required to work with, take specific precautions against, and/or be immunized against potentially hazardous agents.
