About The Position

In addition to all the duties listed in the RVT job description, this person will become part of the management team. The primary function will be to prioritize the wellbeing and efficiency of their departmental team, as well as the management team. This role will be instrumental in helping their department adapt and grow as needed as well as advocating for the hospital as a whole and participating in discussion with other team leads and ownership as needed. In addition to working with management, the Lead RVT will collaborate with the veterinarians within their department to ensure we are maintaining and improving the highest standards of care. Time commitment will depend on size of team as well as needs, but time will be set aside for management and administration within their schedule. Boreal does encourage leadership teams to set boundaries but there may occasionally be requirements to respond to texts or emails during personal time.

Requirements

  • Active member of the ABVMA and ABVTA
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs (22 kg)
  • A desire to grow the RVT profession
  • Excellence in basic RVT skills including patient monitoring, venipuncture, and IV catheter placement
  • High proficiency with monitoring equipment (pulse oximetry, ECG, capnography, etc.)
  • Willingness to create opportunities for themselves, the hospital, and their team
  • Intent to share knowledge and expertise with others to elevate them

Responsibilities

  • Conduct physical examinations and patient assessments
  • Calculate, draw, and administer oral and injectable medications
  • Supervise and support Animal Care Assistants with their patient care
  • Effectively communicate with clients via phone, email, and in person
  • Generate estimates and review informed consent with clients
  • Administer, monitor, and recover patients from anesthesia
  • Perform medical procedures as prescribed by the veterinarian
  • Perform venipuncture and catheter placements
  • Use in-house laboratory equipment and submission reference laboratory tests as needed
  • Obtain quality images with Xray, CT or ultrasound
  • Perform advanced diagnostic tests including scopes
  • Fill prescriptions, relay orders for compounded medications
  • Admit and set- up patients for hospitalization and transfer to ICU
  • Manage hospitalized patients, perform recovery care and additional specialized treatments
  • Assist DVMs with appointments
  • Perform tech appointments
  • Triage patients
  • Double check aftercare for the Animal Care Attendants
  • Assist with maintenance and quality control of equipment
  • Mentor and support other members of the veterinary team
  • Contribute suggestions to improve hospital flow and patient care
  • Maintain detailed and accurate medical records
  • Oversee the day-to-day general management and support of the specialty RVTs
  • Provide mentorship to the specialty RVTs
  • Advocate for your team
  • Actively listen and provide constructive feedback to your team and management
  • Collaborate with the veterinarians to ensure Boreal is maintaining and improving the highest standards of care and that your team is contributing to its success
  • Supervise and adapt schedules for the service
  • Identify and prepare for potential changes or problems the department may experience (impending maternity leaves, additional DVMs added to the service, etc)
  • Manager Specialty team recruitment and hiring efforts
  • Oversee the training of new employees, both directly and indirectly
  • Develop training materials for the Specialty team, establishing and updating protocols as needed
  • Manage issues as they arise on the floor
  • Liaise with Hospital Manager to manage employee matters including performance management and conflict resolution within the team
  • Ensure communication between departments.

  • Participate in staffing budget discussions, performance reviews, wage recommendations and any other financial discussions required of you
