Android Engineer, Identity Product

Stripe•Seattle, WA

About The Position

Stripe Identity builds digital identity-verification products that help online businesses establish trust with their users. The Identity Product Experience team owns mobile SDKs for iOS, Android, and React Native, enabling businesses to embed secure identity-verification experiences in their applications. The team’s work spans user experience, SDK architecture, camera and document capture, developer experience, security, accessibility, reliability, and integration with Stripe backend systems. As an Android engineer on the Identity team, you will design, build, and maintain mobile SDKs and verification experiences. You will create polished flows for identity-document and selfie capture, develop reliable SDK APIs and reusable components, and deliver features across mobile clients, APIs, and services. You will also improve performance, reliability, testing, observability, release processes, and backward compatibility; make architectural decisions that balance user and developer experience with security, privacy, and maintainability; collaborate across disciplines; incorporate feedback from Stripe users and field teams; and operate and improve the systems and SDKs the team owns.

Requirements

  • At least 3 years of professional software-development experience, including meaningful experience building and shipping mobile applications or SDKs.
  • Experience developing for at least one major mobile platform, using technologies such as Kotlin or Java for Android.
  • Strong software-design fundamentals and experience creating maintainable APIs, components, or frameworks.
  • Experience delivering mobile functionality beyond an isolated UI layer, such as integrating with APIs and services, handling local state, or using device capabilities.
  • Experience testing, debugging, monitoring, and improving mobile software in production.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with engineering, product, design, and technical and non-technical partners.
  • Demonstrated commitment to high-quality user and developer experiences.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience building mobile SDKs, shared libraries, or developer-facing APIs used outside your immediate team.
  • Experience with both iOS and Android, or cross-platform technologies such as React Native or Kotlin Multiplatform.
  • Experience with camera, image-processing, document-capture, biometrics, or other device-integrated mobile experiences.
  • Experience designing mobile software that handles sensitive data and applies security and privacy principles by default.
  • Familiarity with accessibility, internationalization, mobile performance, and unreliable network conditions.
  • Experience with mobile CI, automated testing, release automation, observability, or developer-productivity tooling.
  • Experience contributing to backend APIs or services that support mobile products.
  • Ability to simplify complex requirements and favor durable, scalable solutions.
  • Comfort reasoning clearly and moving with urgency in a fast-paced, ambiguous environment.
  • Familiarity with Stripe’s products, ideally through integrating Stripe APIs or SDKs into another application.

Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and maintain Stripe Identity’s mobile SDKs and verification experiences across iOS, Android, and React Native.
  • Create intuitive, polished experiences for identity-document and selfie capture, accounting for accessibility, device capabilities, and varied real-world conditions.
  • Build reliable and extensible SDK APIs and reusable components that make it easy for developers to integrate Stripe Identity into their applications.
  • Work across mobile clients, supporting APIs, and services to deliver features end to end.
  • Improve SDK performance, reliability, observability, testing, release processes, and backward compatibility.
  • Make architectural decisions balancing user experience, developer experience, security, privacy, and long-term maintainability.
  • Partner with product managers, designers, machine-learning engineers, backend engineers, user researchers, and other mobile teams.
  • Work with Stripe users and field teams to understand integration challenges and turn feedback into product and platform improvements.
  • Help establish and evolve mobile-engineering practices across Identity and Stripe.
  • Operate and maintain the systems and SDKs the team owns, diagnose production issues, and improve them based on what the team learns.
