Android Engineer, Identity

Stripe•San Francisco, CA

About The Position

Stripe is hiring an Android engineer for its Identity Product Experience team. Stripe Identity provides digital identity verification for businesses, supporting fraud prevention, regulatory, and trust and safety needs. The team builds mobile SDKs for iOS, Android, and React Native so businesses can embed secure, high-quality verification experiences in their applications. The role focuses on building and maintaining mobile SDKs and verification flows, including identity-document and selfie capture. It spans mobile user experience, SDK architecture and APIs, developer experience, security, accessibility, reliability, and integration with Stripe backend systems. The engineer will collaborate across disciplines, work with Stripe users and field teams, and operate and improve the systems and SDKs the team owns.

Requirements

  • At least 3 years of professional software-development experience, including meaningful experience building and shipping mobile applications or SDKs.
  • Experience developing for at least one major mobile platform, using technologies such as Kotlin or Java for Android.
  • Strong software-design fundamentals and experience creating maintainable APIs, components, or frameworks.
  • Experience delivering mobile functionality beyond an isolated UI layer, such as integrating APIs and services, handling local state, or working with device capabilities.
  • Experience testing, debugging, monitoring, and improving mobile software in production.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with engineering, product, design, and technical and non-technical partners.
  • Demonstrated commitment to high-quality user and developer experiences.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience building mobile SDKs, shared libraries, or developer-facing APIs used outside the immediate team.
  • Experience with both iOS and Android, or cross-platform technologies such as React Native or Kotlin Multiplatform.
  • Experience with camera, image processing, document capture, biometrics, or other device-integrated mobile experiences.
  • Experience designing mobile software that handles sensitive data and applies security and privacy principles by default.
  • Familiarity with accessibility, internationalization, mobile performance, and unreliable network conditions.
  • Experience with mobile CI, automated testing, release automation, observability, or developer-productivity tooling.
  • Experience contributing to backend APIs or services that support mobile products.
  • Ability to simplify complex requirements and favor durable, scalable solutions.
  • Comfort reasoning clearly and moving with urgency in a fast-paced, ambiguous environment.
  • Familiarity with Stripe products, ideally through integrating Stripe APIs or SDKs into another application.

Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and maintain Stripe Identity mobile SDKs and verification experiences across iOS, Android, and React Native.
  • Create intuitive, polished identity-document and selfie-capture flows that account for accessibility, device capabilities, and real-world conditions.
  • Build reliable, extensible SDK APIs and reusable components that make integration easy for developers.
  • Work across mobile clients, supporting APIs, and services to deliver end-to-end features.
  • Improve SDK performance, reliability, observability, testing, release processes, and backward compatibility.
  • Make architectural decisions balancing user experience, developer experience, security, privacy, and long-term maintainability.
  • Partner with product managers, designers, machine-learning engineers, backend engineers, user researchers, and other mobile teams.
  • Work with Stripe users and field teams to understand integration challenges and apply feedback to product and platform improvements.
  • Help establish and evolve mobile-engineering practices across Identity and Stripe.
  • Operate and maintain owned systems and SDKs, diagnose production issues, and improve them based on what the team learns.
