Senior Android Engineer

About The Position

Medium is hiring a Senior Mobile Engineer to build and evolve its Android experience for readers and writers. This is a product engineering role: the engineer will own Android features from understanding user needs through implementation, launch, and evaluating performance after release. They will help determine what should be built, make sound decisions when requests are ambiguous, and collaborate closely with design and engineering teammates. Android will be the primary focus, with the ability to contribute credibly on at least one other platform—web, iOS, or backend—to support cross-platform decisions and collaboration. The role also contributes to mobile engineering quality, testing, and product thinking, and offers influence over engineering strategy, culture, and direction. Medium is a fully remote company with teammates across the U.S. and France; the role includes twice-yearly in-person offsites hosted at locations around the U.S.

Requirements

  • Several years of experience building production Android apps.
  • Fluency in Kotlin, Jetpack Compose, coroutines, Flow, and modern Android architecture.
  • Expertise in Android engineering and the ability to work credibly on at least one other platform: web, iOS, or backend.
  • Product engineering judgment, including understanding the underlying problem, challenging requests when appropriate, and evaluating impact after launch.
  • Experience working closely with designers and engineers on other platforms.
  • Ability to communicate technical tradeoffs clearly to non-engineers.
  • Adaptability, strong systems instincts, eagerness to learn, and openness to better approaches.
  • Ability to move work forward amid ambiguity and make tradeoff decisions that keep projects moving.
  • Collaborative approach that contributes to psychological safety.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience using AI to improve a team's leverage, reach, output, and impact.
  • Experience owning product direction rather than only executing someone else's plan.
  • Personal use of Medium and genuine enthusiasm for its mission of empowering humans to write meaningfully for other humans.

Responsibilities

  • Own Android features end to end, from understanding the problem and building the solution through shipping and evaluating its performance.
  • Help shape what gets built by challenging scope, proposing simpler solutions, and raising platform constraints early.
  • Write idiomatic, well-tested Kotlin and Compose UI that fits the team's existing architecture.
  • Work with iOS, web, or backend engineers as needed and help determine where feature functionality should live.
  • Partner with leadership, design, and engineering teams in the U.S. and France to turn rough ideas into well-shipped Android features.
  • Use sound judgment on ambiguous requests, ask effective questions, identify edge cases, and propose reasonable next steps.
  • Shape product and feature spaces and maintain forward momentum when the destination is unclear.
  • Help raise the mobile team's standards for code quality, testing, and product thinking.
  • Attend twice-yearly in-person Medium offsites hosted in locations around the U.S.

Benefits

  • Healthcare benefits covered at 100% for employees and 80% for dependents.
  • Generous parental leave policy.
  • Mental health support through Spring Health, or access to a provider through Rula or Kaiser Mental Health Network.
  • Financial wellness support through Northstar.
  • Stipends for co-working, professional development, and Wi-Fi, plus a one-time home office bonus.
  • Unlimited PTO and standard company holidays.
  • Discounted Medium membership.
  • Fully distributed, remote team with teammates across the U.S. and France.
