About The Position

As a member of Toast’s Android Systems team, the Senior Software Engineer will help build the foundational device-management platform for Toast POS devices, bridging hardware and software. The platform supports device setup, security, firmware and application updates, and ongoing remote management for customers across industries and locations. The team is expanding its mobile device management ecosystem and improving the device lifecycle experience, including using AI to reduce the time operators spend troubleshooting and configuring devices. The role owns design and delivery of features across Android system applications written in Kotlin and Java, and works across on-device applications, cloud services, and Toast hardware. It involves building reliable background services, safely deploying changes to a large device fleet, upgrading applications for new hardware and Android OS versions, improving automated testing on real Toast devices, investigating production issues, and mentoring engineers. The engineer collaborates with Product Management, Hardware, QA, Customer Care, and other software teams, and uses AI tools throughout development. Toast’s broader technology stack includes Android system applications with modern Android libraries and device-owner privileges, Kotlin backend services on AWS, React and TypeScript web applications, automated testing on Toast devices, and fleet deployment tooling such as feature flags, staged rollouts, and production monitoring. The role follows Toast’s hybrid work model; in-office expectations vary by region. The U.S. base salary range depends on geographic zone: Zone A, $159,000–$254,000; Zone B, $138,000–$221,000; Zone C, $125,000–$200,000. Starting salary depends on skills, experience, and geographic location. Total rewards may also include cash compensation, equity, and benefits.

Requirements

  • At least 6 years of Android application development experience.
  • Proficiency in a modern object-oriented programming language such as Kotlin or Java.
  • Deep experience with standard Android architecture patterns and libraries, such as Hilt, AndroidX libraries, and Kotlin Coroutines.
  • Solid understanding of Android application and service lifecycles, background work, and inter-process communication.
  • Experience leading a cross-functional project involving multiple engineers and product, QA, and design teams from ideation through launch and production support.
  • Proven ability to debug complex issues across app, framework, and OS layers using tools such as adb, logcat, and bug reports.
  • Experience using AI tools throughout the development lifecycle, including design, coding, testing, and debugging.
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to write technical designs.
  • Strong customer empathy and motivation to build reliable tools that make restaurant operators’ lives easier.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience developing Android software for devices, accounting for offline mode, battery impact, and background services.
  • Experience with the Android framework, AOSP, system services, or Android system apps written in Kotlin or Java.
  • Experience with Android Device Owner or Device Policy Controller APIs.
  • Understanding of mobile device management concepts and enterprise device management platforms.
  • Experience shipping software to a large device fleet, such as through OTA updates and staged rollouts.
  • Experience writing automated tests using Robot, UIAutomator, or other testing frameworks.

Responsibilities

  • Own the design and delivery of features across Android system applications in Kotlin and Java, including device policy enforcement, out-of-box setup, and firmware and app updates.
  • Write technical designs for features spanning on-device apps, cloud services, and Toast hardware; lead effort estimation and project planning.
  • Build reliable background services that operate with little or no user interaction and deploy them safely across the Toast fleet using feature flags, staged rollouts, and monitoring.
  • Lead Android application upgrades for new Toast hardware and Android OS upgrades, working with Hardware and Firmware partners.
  • Expand end-to-end automated testing on real Toast hardware using Robot Framework to reduce manual regression testing.
  • Investigate complex production issues across the device fleet and partner with Customer Care and pilot customers during rollouts.
  • Mentor engineers through code reviews, design feedback, and pairing.
  • Collaborate with Product Management, Hardware, QA, and other software teams to build scalable systems and make sound technical decisions focused on quality, security, and maintainability.
  • Use AI tools to improve development workflow and velocity, and help develop new approaches to building.
