About The Position

ProPublica is seeking a two-year Ancil Payne reporting fellow to conduct enterprising investigations focused on the state of California. This role will involve a mix of short-, medium-, and long-term stories, including independent reporting and writing, as well as collaboration on major ProPublica projects. The fellow will report to the senior editor, California, and work with the new California team. The fellowship is based in California and is not open to remote applicants. The candidate should either live in the state or be willing to relocate.

Requirements

At least three and no more than seven years of professional journalism experience.
Eagerness to develop investigative reporting skills.
A strong accountability lens and interest in focusing it on California.
A track record of asking tough questions and publishing original, revelatory, in-depth or investigative stories.
A dedication to digging for the truth, holding people and institutions accountable.
A desire to report stories that are both important and powerfully told.
Ability to bring perspectives and life experiences that drive fresh angles and approaches for covering the news.
Eligibility to work in the U.S.

Responsibilities

Reporting and writing stories of your own.
Collaborating on ProPublica’s biggest and most complex projects.
Taking on increasingly complex stories during their time on staff.
Working independently and with colleagues.
Conducting quick investigations reported over a couple of weeks.
Undertaking longer projects that may require a few months (or more) of digging.
Traveling for assignments, staff meetings, and trainings, as necessary.
Working collaboratively with others in a highly collaborative newsroom, both across teams and with other news organizations regionally and nationally.
