About The Position

This position works in the CytoPrep lab supporting the Cytology Section of the Department of Pathology. Responsibilities include case accessioning; entering gross description of cytology specimens; preparation, staining, and cover slipping of fine needle aspirate samples; manual preparation of cell blocks, reprocessing GYN samples, maintaining instrumentation in the department, maintaining supplies; disposal of old specimens; identify and resolve labeling/identification discrepancies. Patient interaction required as this position supports Radiology and Endoscopy during FNA, EBUS and EUS procedures.

Requirements

  • High School or GED (Required)
  • HT - Histotechnician Registered - American Society for Clinical Pathology
  • Experience in a position such as Technical Lab Assistant or other hospital based assistant (surgery, gen med).
  • Highly skilled communicator and critical thinking skills.
  • Medical terminology and Basic anatomy knowledge.
  • strong computer skills.

Responsibilities

  • Accurately accession all surgical pathology specimens/case types in the AP LIS. Must be diligent with proper specimen identification and labeling. All discrepancies must be addressed in a timely and professional manner with all health care personnel to ensure optimal patient care.
  • Accurately complete the gross evaluation of small uncomplicated surgical specimens. This necessitates proper description/dictation, identification, and cassetting of the specimen.
  • Assist Pathologist in the evaluation and selection of tissue at time of frozen section. Perform all functions of the slide preparation including tissue freezing, cutting, staining, and cover slipping. Preparation of the staining alcohol/air-dried touch preps. Process special study tissue i.e., ER/PR, Lymphoma, Chromosome analysis when needed. Must be able to keep simultaneous frozen section specimens on different patients and/or same patient with multiple sites separated, properly identified, labeled, and organized.
  • Identify and prepare the body for autopsy. Perform the evisceration of autopsy cases. Evisceration includes organ/organ block removal, weighing of selected organs. Closing of the body cavities and cleaning of the autopsy suite. The cleaning is to follow the established safety and infection control procedures.
  • Ensure that all instruments are sharp and that workstations are well stocked. Maintain all machines in an excellent working manner. Keep supply inventory at an optimum level and order supplies when needed. Ensure that the general cleanliness of the gross room is preserved in an excellent manner.
  • This includes, but is not limited to, the disposal of tissue, observance of all safety precautions, computer knowledge, file correlation and troubleshooting.
