About The Position

The Anatomic Pathology Support Technician is responsible for processing, describing, and dissecting small tissue specimens, and preparing slides for rapid diagnosis. This role involves receiving, registering, and interpreting medical information accurately for data entry and technical assessment of specimen integrity. It requires critical thinking, decisive judgment to identify specimen types (Microbiology, Cytology, Histology, or fresh specimens requiring pathologist assessment), and technical preparation including touch preps, frozen sectioning, and staining. Specialized patient testing preparation and data entry are also required. Excellent analytical and communication skills are necessary to provide information to clients, clinicians, or hospital divisions, which directly impacts patient care. The technician will also maintain equipment and supplies, and be responsible for the receipt, distribution, and return of patient pathology slides within the UH system. Participation in a regional float pool may be required.

Requirements

High School Equivalent / GED (Required)
2+ years Of experience in a similar position and can demonstrate proficiency of all skills in that level. (Required)
Microsoft Office skills in Word and Excel (Required proficiency)
Customer service skills (Required proficiency)
Knowledge of medical terminology (Required proficiency)
Knowledge of pathology terminology (Required proficiency)
Knowledge of pathology lab testing including reflex pathways for anatomic pathology. (Required proficiency)

Nice To Haves

Associate's Degree in a science related field (Preferred)
Prior histology lab experience (Preferred)
Previous Medical Laboratory experience (Preferred)
Lab equipment maintenance (Preferred proficiency)
Computer skills essential; knowledge of laboratory information systems (Preferred proficiency)

Responsibilities

Processing, describing, and dissecting small tissue specimens and preparing slides for rapid diagnosis.
Receiving, registering, and interpreting medical information accurately to perform data entry and technical assessment of specimen integrity.
Identifying Microbiology and/or Cytology, fixed tissues-Histology, or fresh- ALL intraoperative specimens requiring adequacy or assessment by a Pathologist.
Technical preparation of the assessment: touch preps, frozen sectioning, and staining.
Specialized patient testing preparation/data entry.
Directing or providing information to clients, clinicians, or hospital divisions.
Maintaining equipment and supplies as needed.
Receipt, distribution, and return of patient pathology slides within the UH system.
Participation in regional float pool (as needed).
Provides service to Clients, Patients, and Hospital Divisions. Answers phones, reports results, and assists clients.
Registers and Accessions Surgical and Cytology specimens for diagnosis, maintains specimen TAT and Integrity.
Sections tissue samples and stains slides for Frozen section histological diagnosis.
Assists with laboratory support functions.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Complies with all policies and standards.
Must abide by all requirements to safely and securely maintain Protected Health Information (PHI) for our patients.
