Analytics Engineer, Semantic Layer

Welldoc Inc•Columbia, MD
•$110,000 - $130,000•Onsite

About The Position

The Analytics Engineer will join Welldoc’s Reporting & Visualization (analytics) team and design and build the semantic layer that defines how the company measures its business. This layer will power BI dashboards and AI-driven applications. The position is an individual-contributor role with leadership scope, serving as the team’s data-model expert and helping set modeling standards, shape data governance, and influence how analysts, engineers, and business stakeholders use data. The role owns the data model end to end, from business definitions and implementation to ongoing maintenance. It involves working with analysts and stakeholders to understand their questions and create clean, reusable metrics, while exercising judgment in an ambiguous environment. The role is intended for someone who wants to work in person with a small, collaborative team. Welldoc operates in ISO 13485 and MDSAP-regulated and HITRUST- and SOC 2 Type II-compliant environments. Employees are expected to have prior experience in these environments or receive training on the relevant requirements and culture for their roles.

Requirements

  • 3–5 years designing and building data models and transformations for analytics use cases.
  • At least 3 years of hands-on Databricks experience, including Unity Catalog and the Bronze/Silver/Gold medallion architecture.
  • Hands-on experience building a semantic or metrics layer.
  • Advanced SQL skills, working Python skills, and experience with Git-based development workflows.
  • A track record of translating ambiguous business needs into concrete data models and metric definitions.
  • Clear written and verbal communication, especially with non-technical audiences.
  • A proactive, ownership-driven mindset, including the ability to identify problems and opportunities independently.
  • Prior experience in ISO 13485 and MDSAP-regulated or HITRUST- and SOC 2 Type II-compliant environments, or willingness to complete training on the requirements relevant to the role.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with Databricks metric views is strongly preferred; experience with dbt Semantic Layer/MetricFlow, LookML, Cube, or Power BI semantic models is also relevant.
  • Experience with Power BI as a downstream consumer of a semantic layer.
  • Experience preparing data for AI/BI tools such as Databricks Genie or LLM applications.
  • A bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Data Science, or Business Analytics is preferred.
  • A master’s degree in a relevant field may substitute for some required experience.

Responsibilities

  • Design and build the consumption layer using Databricks Unity Catalog metric views, defining reusable measures, dimensions, joins, and business logic.
  • Evaluate current Silver and Gold data structures, recommend changes, and lead the buildout of a model focused on usability, performance, and scale.
  • Partner with analysts, data engineers, and business stakeholders to translate business questions into well-scoped technical requirements.
  • Ensure the semantic layer supports Power BI reporting, self-service analytics, and AI tools such as Databricks Genie and LLM-based applications.
  • Help establish modeling conventions, documentation, data quality checks, and metric definitions, working with the Data Governance Council.
  • Apply version control, testing, modular design, and automation to analytics workflows.
  • Evaluate new tools and features as the technology stack evolves and recommend worthwhile options.
  • Diagnose data issues and clearly explain root causes and fixes to non-technical stakeholders.
