Analytics Engineer, Data Platform

Proper Hospitality Careers•Santa Monica, CA

About The Position

Proper Hospitality is seeking an Analytics Engineer to join its corporate team in Los Angeles. The company’s data warehouse and core raw pipelines are built; this role will keep them healthy, make them easier to use, and strengthen the foundation for AI-native workflows and data agents. It is an end-to-end, full-stack position focused primarily on data pipelines and foundations, with opportunities to learn how hospitality operations work firsthand. The Analytics Engineer will maintain and improve pipelines, build internal data tools and infrastructure, and prepare clean, secure, well-modeled, documented data for AI workflows, data agents, machine learning, and advanced analytics. The role also supports stakeholders across corporate and property teams, maintains reports and dashboards as needed, and documents institutional data knowledge. The successful candidate will participate in property visits and hands-on learning with operational teams. The position is hybrid and based at the company’s Santa Monica, California office, with in-person work three days per week and occasional travel to properties. Compensation is $140,000–$160,000, based on experience and skills.

Requirements

  • At least 3 years of experience in data engineering, or at least 5 years in data science or analytics.
  • New graduates with 1–2 years of data or analytics experience may be considered if they demonstrate extremely strong proficiency, extraordinary tenacity, and genuine humility.
  • Strong SQL skills and deep hands-on experience with Snowflake, including building and operating pipelines with orchestration such as tasks, streams, dynamic tables, or an external orchestrator.
  • Experience building data pipelines and models that others depend on.
  • Python or a comparable language for tooling, automation, and pipeline work.
  • Working knowledge of Git and CI/CD, or willingness to learn quickly.
  • Methodical debugging approach: reproduce issues, isolate them, and find root causes.
  • Strong fundamentals in coding and systems design, demonstrable without AI assistance.
  • Clear communication with technical and non-technical stakeholders, and judgment in managing competing requests.
  • Ability to complete a systems design discussion and basic coding exercise independently without AI assistance.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with business intelligence and visualization tools such as Tableau, Looker, Sigma, or Power BI.
  • Experience with Snowflake security and governance, including RBAC design, masking policies, row-level access, and data sharing.
  • Experience with GitHub Actions for orchestration and deployment alongside native Snowflake orchestration.
  • Experience with transformation frameworks such as dbt and ingestion tools.
  • Experience deploying Python services on a cloud hosting platform and using infrastructure as code.
  • Experience with hospitality source systems, including property management systems such as Infor HMS, Toast food and beverage point of sale, sales CRM, HR, and revenue management systems.
  • Experience building with LLMs, agents, AI-powered workflows, or internal data apps.
  • Experience with data modeling and dimensional design, testing, and observability practices.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor, triage, and resolve data pipeline bugs and failures, identifying root causes rather than patching symptoms.
  • Manage intake and prioritization of data issues and requests, and keep stakeholders informed.
  • Maintain current data models, tests, and documentation so the warehouse remains trustworthy.
  • Identify recurring failure patterns and build monitoring, alerting, and data quality checks to prevent them.
  • Design and deploy tools and infrastructure that enable teams to access and work with data in the data hub.
  • Automate repetitive operational work, including backfills, access provisioning, validation, and reconciliation.
  • Own deployment and configuration of supporting services for internal tools.
  • Prepare clean, well-modeled, secure, and documented data for AI workflows, data agents, machine learning, and advanced analytics.
  • Partner with analysts, data scientists, and operators to productionize datasets, features, and agent-ready data.
  • Help make AI tools usable and trustworthy for non-technical operators.
  • Respond to data requests from Finance, Revenue, Marketing, Operations, and property teams.
  • Translate business questions into data answers and identify when a new model is needed instead of a one-off query.
  • Document institutional knowledge, including data quirks, definitions, and lineage.
  • Build and maintain reports and dashboards as needed.
  • Participate in site visits, training sessions, and hands-on operator learning experiences, spending time with front desk, food and beverage, events, and revenue teams.
  • Take ownership of the issue queue and stakeholder requests, learn the stack, and visit a property during the first 30 days.
  • Help generate value-adding datasets, analyses, or interactive data tools within the first 90 days.
  • Within six months, improve pipeline quality and make a major change to the core Snowflake platform to improve scalability, security, modeling, cost management, or rollout infrastructure.

  • Paid parental leave for eligible employees welcoming a child through birth, adoption, or foster placement.

  • Opportunities for local volunteerism and participation in sustainability and charitable partnerships.
