This is a unionized position that falls within the Market Ops & Forecast Systems Department in the Information & Technology Services Business Unit. Assist in the provision of life cycle management of information technology solutions to the core component of IESO business in operating the IESO Administered Markets and providing reliable operation of the electrical system (IESO controlled grid).

Requirements

  • Requires a strong academic knowledge of computer science, software systems, engineering principles, and associated subjects, including a strong theoretical knowledge pertinent to the technical and business operations of the electricity market and power system delivery. Requires understanding of system architecture, data communications, networking concepts, database technologies, and the interaction between information technology systems and power system operational technologies.
  • Requires communication skills, including technical report writing, documentation development, stakeholder engagement, and business presentation skills.
  • This knowledge is considered to be normally acquired either through the successful completion of a four-year University education in the appropriate field/discipline or by having the equivalent education.
  • Requires experience or familiarity with: Information technology and operational technology (IT/OT) environments and the integration of software applications supporting power system and market operations.
  • Distributed systems, client-server architectures, application interfaces, and system integration concepts.
  • Computer networks and communications protocols, including TCP/IP, routing, switching, DNS, and network troubleshooting principles.
  • Database management systems, data modelling, data analysis, and structured query languages.
  • Real-time operational systems such as SCADA, market management systems, energy management applications, or related utility technologies.
  • Software development lifecycle methodologies, requirements analysis, testing, deployment, and change management processes.
  • Incident management, root cause analysis, problem resolution, and continuous improvement practices.
  • A period of over four years, up to and including six years, is considered necessary to gain this experience.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of electrical power systems, software engineering principles, systems analysis, network architecture, cybersecurity fundamentals, and real-time operational systems would be considered an asset.
  • design concepts as they relate to the functions and characteristics of power system components,
  • analytical studies and the application of computer techniques to solving power system problems,
  • some familiarity with power system operation, practices and policies,
  • district operating and system requirements,
  • concepts of power system operation including technical features of equipment and facilities, high-tension transmission and system interchange between systems,
  • familiarity with the Market Rules,
  • design concepts for market scheduling and dispatch algorithm and equations,
  • familiarity with market and internal bid-to-bill business processes and procedures,
  • design concept for financial risk management at the IESO administered market level
  • familiarity with various market administration processes and procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Assist/contribute to the development and testing of integrated computer based information solutions for business and operations processes for the reliable operation of the power system and for other administration needs of the IESO Administered Markets. Perform analysis of customer requirements and their testability, the recommendation of functional specifications, and the preparation of recommended information solutions (ie, impacting areas of software, hardware, communications and business processes).
  • Contribute to the management and evolution of existing information systems and tools related to the market operation, supply, security and settlement services related to the management of the power system by contributing to enhancements to allow additional functionality, improved reliability/maintainability and problem correction.
  • Assist/contribute to the identification of opportunities for information solutions that will allow effective and economic benefits for customers. Address the overall solution in terms of quality, communications, data sources, software tools, integration with existing functions, user interfaces, algorithms, etc.
  • Assist in the monitoring and scrutiny of assigned projects for the development and expansion of information systems and tools.
  • Assist in the provision of project management support and quality assurance to projects or teams involved in the expansion and improvement and maintenance of information systems and tools.
  • Contribute to and carry out close customer relationships and be alert to identify potential improvements to existing systems and to propose new information system requirements.
  • Contribute as directed to the development of strategic plans and standards.
  • Contribute with peers and associates to advance their learning and facilitate their problem solving skills within their respective area of expertise.
