About The Position

The Alma Mater Society (AMS) is the University of British Columbia’s (UBC) student society, and works to improve the academic, social and personal lives of the 56,000 UBC students at its Vancouver campus. The AMS also runs nine food and beverage outlets, a catering and conference operation, and the AMS Student Nest, providing on-campus employment opportunities and generating revenue that goes directly back into supporting the students at UBC. Under the direction of the Assistant Services Manager, Tutoring Coordinator, Senior AMS Tutors uphold the mandate of AMS Tutoring by supervising group tutoring sessions and supporting students' academic success. Senior AMS Tutors work alongside Group Tutors in cooperation with AMS Tutoring and its partners, including the Chapman Learning Commons, Beyond Tomorrow Scholars Program (BTSP), World University Service of Canada (WUSC), and Undergraduate Societies. AMS Tutors are also hired to conduct 1-on-1 appointment tutoring with students through the Nimbus tutoring app. Senior AMS Tutors report directly to Assistant Tutoring Coordinator and Tutoring Coordinator.

Requirements

  • Must currently be a registered UBC student with a minimum 80% in the course(s) they wish to tutor.
  • Concessions can be made for students hovering between 75-80% in a course based on interview performance.
  • An unofficial university transcript must be submitted alongside a resume and cover letter (an unofficial transcript from Workday will be accepted).
  • Able to work independently with little supervision.
  • Understanding and patience when working with others.

Responsibilities

  • Provide tutoring to UBC students seeking academic assistance.
  • Ability to thoroughly and clearly explain concepts to students in field of specialty in a calm and respectful manner.
  • Be familiar with the tutoring and learning support services available in the Irving K. Barber Learning Centre and across UBC Campus, including the Chapman Learning Commons Help Desk, Writing Centre, Math Learning Centre, and faculty-based tutoring programs, and refer users accordingly.
  • Correspond with the Tutoring Coordinator, and supervised group tutors. Act as a liaison between the two parties when necessary.
  • Respond to Slack messages/emails in a timely fashion.
  • Report any incidents during tutoring sessions to the Tutoring Coordinator and Assistant Tutoring Coordinator as soon as possible.
  • Help promote AMS Tutoring to the student body.
  • Ensure that students sign in and out of all AMS Tutoring sessions.
  • Supervise a tutoring location by maintaining a friendly and proactive environment while handling concerns raised by students.
  • Establish positive and effective communication amongst all team members.
  • Ensure that the group tutoring sessions are equipped with proper materials for tutors to operate and that signage is present throughout the session.
  • Must ensure that all signs are returned to AMS Services upon conclusion of tutoring sessions.
