About The Position

The Alma Mater Society (AMS) is seeking Appointment Tutors to support students' academic success at the University of British Columbia (UBC). As an AMS Tutor, you will provide one-on-one tutoring sessions with students through the Nimbus tutoring app, covering courses from any faculty and year-level. You will be responsible for clearly explaining concepts in your area of expertise, promoting AMS Tutoring services, and maintaining a professional Nimbus profile. This role offers opportunities for enhanced interpersonal skills, development in time management and communication, networking with AMS staff, and growth in critical thinking and problem-solving abilities.

Requirements

  • Must currently be a registered UBC student.
  • Minimum 80% in the course(s) they wish to tutor (concessions for 75-80% based on interview performance).
  • A university transcript must be submitted alongside a resume and cover letter.
  • An informal transcript from the Student Service Centre or Workday will be accepted.
  • Transcripts from other post-secondary institutions and credit-granting high school programs (IB, AP, A-Levels) are also accepted.
  • Be an enthusiastic team player with a strong work ethic and have a growth mindset.
  • Able to work independently with little supervision.
  • Understanding and patience when working with others.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous tutoring experience is an asset.
  • Proficiency in multiple languages is an asset.
  • Any upper year level quantitative methods course or subject specific statistics courses will be considered as an asset (e.g. BIOL 300, POLI 380, ECON 325/326, etc.).

Responsibilities

  • Provide one-on-one tutoring to UBC students seeking academic assistance via the Nimbus tutoring app.
  • Clearly explain concepts to students in your field of specialty in a calm and respectful manner.
  • Be familiar with and refer students to other available tutoring and learning support services across UBC Campus.
  • Communicate concerns with the Tutoring Coordinator and Assistant Coordinator when they arise.
  • Respond to Slack messages/emails in a timely fashion.
  • Maintain a Nimbus profile and respond to appointment requirements in a timely fashion.
  • Report any incidents that may occur to the Tutoring Coordinator and Assistant Coordinator as soon as possible.
  • Help promote AMS Tutoring to the student body.
  • Attend and participate fully in all training sessions.
