(Part-Time) American Sign Language (ASL) Interpreter
About The Position
The American Sign Language (ASL) Interpreter is responsible for providing professional interpreting services on a part-time basis to support effective communication between Deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals and hearing personnel in government and mission-focused environments. This position plays an important role in facilitating clear, accurate, and confidential communication while supporting operational requirements and accessibility. Global Dimensions is seeking RID- and/or NIC-certified American Sign Language interpreters to join our growing team. This part-time opportunity offers a diverse and professional work environment, with assignments primarily located at government facilities throughout the Washington, D.C., Maryland, and McLean, Virginia, areas. The successful candidate will provide high-quality interpreting services, maintain professional standards, and demonstrate the flexibility, dependability, and commitment needed to support scheduled assignments based on customer and operational requirements. Familiarity with government terminology and acronyms is helpful but not required.
Requirements
- U.S. Citizenship is required.
- RID- and/or NIC certification required.
- Demonstrated proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL) interpreting.
- Ability to provide professional, accurate, and effective interpreting services.
- Strong communication, interpersonal, and professional skills.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and demonstrate sound professional judgment.
- Dependable, responsible, and committed to prioritizing assigned interpreting engagements.
- Ability to work effectively in diverse professional and government environments.
- Ability to comply with applicable customer, organizational, and assignment-specific requirements.
- Must be available to work on a part-time basis and support scheduled assignments based on customer and operational requirements.
- Must be willing to work at designated government facilities in the Washington, D.C., Maryland, and McLean, Virginia, areas, as required.
- Ability to maintain professional certification and meet applicable credentialing requirements.
Nice To Haves
- Additional compensation will be provided to interpreters who possess an active SECRET security clearance.
- Familiarity with government terminology and acronyms is helpful but not required.
- Active DoD SECRET security clearance.
- Previous experience providing interpreting services in government, military, or other professional environments.
- Familiarity with government agencies, military terminology, and operational acronyms.
- Experience supporting assignments in secure or controlled-access facilities.
- Experience working with diverse populations and communication needs.
- Availability to support current and future interpreting requirements.
Responsibilities
- Provide American Sign Language (ASL) interpreting services for government personnel, employees, and other authorized individuals in a professional and timely manner.
- Facilitate accurate and effective communication between Deaf or hard-of-hearing individuals and hearing personnel.
- Support interpreting assignments at government facilities throughout the Washington, D.C., Maryland, and McLean, Virginia, areas.
- Maintain professionalism, confidentiality, and impartiality during all interpreting assignments.
- Apply appropriate interpreting techniques and professional standards based on the communication needs and requirements of each assignment.
- Coordinate with supervisors, designated points of contact, and customer personnel to support scheduling and assignment requirements.
- Arrive prepared and on time for scheduled assignments and promptly communicate scheduling conflicts or availability concerns.
- Maintain familiarity with relevant government terminology, acronyms, and operational environments to support effective communication.
- Follow all applicable organizational policies, customer requirements, security procedures, and workplace safety guidelines.
- Maintain professional certification and comply with applicable interpreting standards and continuing professional development requirements.
- Identify and communicate assignment-related concerns or challenges to supervisors as appropriate.
- Perform additional duties as assigned in support of organizational and customer requirements.
