About The Position

BETA Systems International (BSI) is seeking qualified American Sign Language (ASL) Interpreters to provide communication access services for Deaf and Hard of Hearing students at Ocean County College in Toms River, New Jersey. Interpreters will support students during college courses and other approved academic activities. Assignments may include classroom lectures, labs, meetings, student activities, and other College programs. The College uses interpreters on an as-needed basis. When possible, the same interpreter will support an assigned student throughout the academic semester to provide continuity of service. BSI's scope includes both in-person ASL interpretation and remote Video Remote Interpreting (VRI).

Requirements

  • National Interpreter Certification (NIC) through the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID).
  • Fluency in American Sign Language and English.
  • Ability to interpret in a post-secondary academic environment.
  • Knowledge of Deaf culture and professional interpreting practices.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to work with students, faculty, and College staff.
  • Ability to accept assignments based on changing academic schedules.
  • Reliable transportation for on-site assignments in Toms River, New Jersey.
  • For remote assignments, reliable high-speed internet, video capability, and an appropriate private work environment.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior ASL interpreting experience in a college or university.
  • Experience interpreting lectures, labs, technical material, or student meetings.
  • Experience providing both in-person and Video Remote Interpreting (VRI).
  • Experience supporting the same student or course throughout an academic term.
  • Familiarity with disability support services in higher education.

Responsibilities

  • Provide accurate ASL interpretation between Deaf or Hard of Hearing students and hearing faculty, staff, students, and other participants.
  • Interpret classroom lectures, discussions, labs, meetings, and other academic activities.
  • Convey spoken English into ASL and signed communication into spoken English.
  • Prepare for assignments by reviewing available course or subject matter information.
  • Maintain the meaning, intent, tone, and context of communications.
  • Support consistent access throughout scheduled class periods and assignments.
  • Report to assignments on time and remain available for the full scheduled period.
  • Coordinate with BSI regarding schedules, changes, cancellations, and coverage needs.
  • Maintain student privacy and confidentiality.
  • Follow professional interpreting ethics and standards.
  • Provide remote interpretation when assigned and maintain the equipment and internet connection needed for video-based services.
