About The Position

The American Museum of Asmat Art, located on the second floor of the Anderson Student Center, showcases art from southwestern New Guinea (West Papua). This role involves assisting with the digitization of Asmat documents and materials, researching Asmat shields, learning about metadata best practices, and using Omeka to create a database for digital collections. Assistants will also engage with an international network of Asmat stakeholders.

• Familiarity with Mac computers, Excel spreadsheets, Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, OneDrive, and Google Drive.
• Must be a degree-seeking undergraduate, graduate, or doctoral student at St. Thomas.
• Must be actively enrolled at least part-time in courses for credit.

Responsibilities

• Work with project supervisors and the visual resources coordinator to digitize Asmat documents and other materials.
• Research Asmat shields in terms of regional style and iconography.
• Learn about Dublin Core and best practices for creating metadata to describe and organize digital content.
• Use Omeka (web-publishing platform) to create a database for digital collections and other Asmat resources.
• Work with an international network of Asmat stakeholders that includes museum and private collections.
• Regularly check emails and promptly respond to messages from directors and graduate student supervisors.
• Attend a few evening events as expected.
• Participate in remote and in-person meetings.
