About The Position

The Ambassador Keeper performs daily keeper work and skilled assignments related to the care and feeding of ambassador animals, including skunks, porcupines, parrots, domestic goats, reptiles, and other species. The role supports the highest level of animal wellbeing through species-specific husbandry, enrichment, and advanced training techniques. The keeper works as an integral part of the zoo team and communicates effectively with coworkers, management, volunteers, and guests. This position is with Brevard Zoo, an AZA-accredited facility in Melbourne, Florida.

Requirements

• One year of zoo keeping experience at an AZA-accredited facility.
• Valid State of Florida driver’s license.
• Flexibility to work holidays, weekends, evenings, after-hours animal events as scheduled, and during emergencies.
• Willingness to work in inclement weather, including temperatures exceeding 100 degrees and high humidity.
• Excellent understanding of animal behavior and operant conditioning.
• Ability to communicate intelligently and diplomatically with coworkers, volunteers, and guests.

Nice To Haves

• Ambassador animal experience.
• Experience presenting in front of audiences.
• Experience with positive reinforcement training.
• Bachelor’s or Associate’s degree in a related field.

Responsibilities

• Provide general husbandry for animals in the Ambassador Animal section, including cleaning habitats, preparing diets, training, providing enrichment, and observing animal health and welfare daily.
• Perform minor habitat repairs and maintenance.
• Work regularly with all species in the section; training is provided.
• Accurately maintain and complete daily records.
• Train additional staff and interns.
• Speak to small and large audiences about designated topics.
• Work with and under the guidance of Animal Management to maintain the zoo’s standards of animal wellbeing.
• Initiate and write accurate reports and manage assigned projects.
• Follow all zoo standard operating procedures.
