The ALS Technician - Emergency Department demonstrates clinical assessment skills by actively participating in the patient care plan. They complete and document direct patient care without supervision, including vital signs, intake and output, point of care testing, specimen collection, weights, venipunctures, and specified procedures. The technician collaborates routinely with nurses and physicians regarding patient care needs and brings issues affecting quality of care to the attention of management. They perform basic triage functions, document findings, and serve as a role model and coach to new staff. The role involves participating in individualized care plans, anticipating patient needs, and assisting with clerical and transport duties. The technician implements physician orders and departmental guidelines promptly and accurately, functioning as a unit resource and patient advocate. They independently provide treatments such as IV initiation, venipuncture, urinary catheter care, and suctioning. A key responsibility is monitoring cardiac monitors, interpreting rhythm strips, and notifying nursing staff of abnormal findings. The technician also ensures the department is operationally ready by managing supplies, equipment, and participating in quality improvement initiatives. They act as a department liaison for EMS, ensuring smooth patient transitions and proper care of EMS equipment. Specialty functions include transporting patients requiring cardiac monitoring, central monitoring of telemetry patients, interpreting rhythm strips, monitoring IV sites, transporting stable patients with drug infusions, and recognizing and reporting changes in patient condition that require activation of the Rapid Response Team or Code Blue, initiating basic resuscitative measures until the teams arrive. Post-cardiac catheterization groin checks, IV insertion, venipuncture, and EKG monitoring and interpretation are also performed.
