About The Position

Responsible to the Manager of the ED for overall practice; works under the supervision of the Nursing Supervisor and Charge Nurse in the Emergency Department. This role requires a high school diploma or GED, two years of patient care experience, and the ability to follow directions and work independently or with others. The technician must demonstrate a high level of mental and emotional tolerance, maintaining a professional attitude when interacting with patients, families, and co-workers. A valid driver's license and National Registry Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) or Pennsylvania EMT Certification are required. The position involves providing safe and effective patient care, responding to emergencies, obtaining specimens, starting and discontinuing non-medicated IVs, preparing patients for surgery, performing catheterizations and catheter care, preparing patients for transport, transporting patients, assisting with transfers, performing EKGs, assisting with casting and splinting, providing basic patient care (hygiene, feeding), obtaining vital signs, administering enemas, recording and reporting patient information, providing post-mortem care, performing specific tests (BSG, strep, urine pregnancy, bladder scanning), ordering and stocking supplies, driving hospital vehicles (wheelchair van, litter van, ambulance), maintaining a clean and safe environment, discarding and replenishing supplies, organizing patient areas and hallways, preparing instruments for reprocessing, and maintaining clear hallways. Effective communication, observation of patient conditions, reporting to the Charge Nurse, documenting DOA patient information, addressing patients appropriately, greeting and directing visitors, prioritizing duties, and maintaining current job knowledge through mandatory in-services and training are also key aspects of the role. Miscellaneous duties as assigned are also part of the responsibilities.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Two years patient care experience.
  • Demonstrates ability to follow directions and work independently, as well as with other personnel in clinical area.
  • Works collaboratively with Emergency Department staff members.
  • Demonstrates a high level of mental and emotional tolerance and even temperament when dealing with all people: uses tact, sensitivity, sound judgment and a professional attitude when relating with patient families and co-workers at all times.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • National Registry Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) or Pennsylvania EMT Certification required.
  • Meets the American Heart Association’s standards for Healthcare Provider Basic Life Support (BLS) and renews BLS every two years.

Responsibilities

  • Provides safe, effective patient care.
  • Responds to cardiac arrests and codes in the ED & areas with the ED’s direct responsibility.
  • Obtains or draw specimens for laboratory tests when ordered by physicians order.
  • Starts and discontinues non-medicated IV’s as directed by registered nurses.
  • Prepares patients for surgery.
  • Performs catheterization on patients 15 years or older.
  • Performs catheter care on alert patients that are too incapacitated to do their own.
  • Teaches catheter care to alert patients that are capable of self-care.
  • Assists in preparing patients for transport.
  • Transports patients as directed.
  • Assists in transferring patients.
  • Performs Electrocardiograms (EKGs) as directed.
  • Performs appropriate casting and splinting under the guidance of the physician.
  • Assists with patient care, i.e., hygiene, feeding, providing patients with bedpans, urinals, etc., as appropriate.
  • Obtains vital signs as directed.
  • Administers enemas as needed.
  • Records and reports care provided to include patient complaints and observations.
  • Provides post mortem care as directed.
  • Completes BSG, strep and urine pregnancy testing as ordered.
  • Performs bladder scanning as directed.
  • Orders supplies for the Emergency Department as a routine job responsibility.
  • Assures all rooms are adequately stocked with supplies.
  • Drives hospital wheelchair van/litter van and ambulance when directed by charge nurse/clinical supervisor.
  • Maintains clean safe environment for patients, visitors and employees.
  • Discards used supplies following care of patient; replenishing supplies used.
  • Assists in keeping areas such as patient rooms, utility room, traction and supply closets and hallways clean and organized.
  • Prepares instruments for reprocessing when necessary.
  • Maintains hallways; keeps wheelchairs and litter from hallways.
  • Transports excess equipment to areas as needed.
  • Replaces equipment to appropriate areas.
  • Utilizes appropriate policies and procedures when completing tasks.
  • Establishes, maintains, and promotes effective communication.
  • Observes and reports changes with patient conditions to appropriate registered nurse.
  • Reports to Charge Nurse when arriving and departing.
  • Documents appropriate information on dead on arrival (DOA) patients in the morgue.
  • Addresses patients with appropriate title as agreed by patient and family.
  • Greets and direct visitors to proper locations, instructing visitors on administrative visitation policy.
  • Demonstrates ability to prioritize duties and maintain appropriate communication with that activity.
  • Demonstrates current job knowledge and performance.
  • Attends all mandatory in-services and educational programs.
  • Participates in appropriate training programs following hospital policies.
  • Performs related and miscellaneous duties as assigned.
