Aircraft Mechanic I (Sheetmetal)

Amentum•Groton, CT

About The Position

The Aircraft Sheetmetal Mechanic I fabricates, installs, repairs, and maintains aircraft sheet-metal parts and assemblies. The role involves interpreting work requests, specifications, blueprints, drawings, models, and other technical data; developing working sketches, parts, and templates; and planning and carrying out sheet-metal maintenance and fabrication work. The mechanic determines the type and extent of repair or replacement, selects materials and methods, and lays out, cuts, forms, joins, assembles, and installs parts made from a range of materials, including aluminum, steel, titanium, and other metals and nonmetals. Work includes producing complex aircraft parts and repairs, using sheet-metal machinery and hand tools, and fastening parts with rivets, screws, bolts, or seams. The mechanic applies protective compounds and materials, takes precautions when working with dissimilar metals, and ensures completed aircraft parts meet applicable specifications and quality standards. The position may involve working inside fuel tanks or other confined spaces, participating in maintenance test flights and operational checks, inspecting maintenance work, making aircraft-log entries, and occasionally leading teams on complex tasks. Technical guidance is provided by a supervisor or higher-level technician as required. The position requires adherence to safety procedures, use of appropriate personal protective equipment, and maintenance of a safe, clean work environment. Work may take place in a maintenance shop or outdoors, including austere and all-weather conditions. The environment may be drafty, noisy, dirty, and involve exposure to operating equipment, electrical hazards, moving parts, and vehicles. The role requires physical activity such as standing, walking, climbing, crouching, crawling, reaching, handling tools and parts, and lifting or moving heavy objects.

  • Must possess personal shadowed or etched tools and a toolbox.
  • Thorough knowledge of aircraft mechanical-component troubleshooting, repair procedures, and replacement of parts.
  • Broad knowledge of aircraft sheet-metal and structural modifications and repair.
  • Basic knowledge of electrical theory and thorough knowledge of aircraft-specific tools and equipment, including test equipment, torque wrenches, dial indicators, micrometers, sheet-metal brakes, and shears.
  • Working knowledge of technical publications and Logistics Information Systems.
  • Ability to prioritize workloads to maintain assigned project schedules.
  • Experience level sufficient to inspect required aeronautical maintenance performed by mechanics.

  • Determine the type and extent of aircraft sheet-metal repairs or replacements, and select suitable materials and repair methods.
  • Plan, lay out, cut, form, shape, join, assemble, and install aircraft sheet-metal parts and assemblies.
  • Use sheet-metal machines, hand tools, and developed patterns or templates to fabricate parts, including complex parts with multiple contours and planes.
  • Align, drill, and ream material and assemble components using rivets, screws, nuts, bolts, or seams, while protecting dissimilar metals.
  • Apply protective compounds, insulating tape, plastic cement, fiberglass resins, and other required protective materials.
  • Ensure finished aircraft parts meet requirements for soundness, strength, appearance, and applicable specifications.
  • Follow safety procedures, use appropriate personal protective equipment, and maintain a safe, clean work environment.
  • Inspect required aeronautical maintenance performed by mechanics and, as required, participate in maintenance test flights and operational checks.
  • Prioritize workloads to maintain project schedules and occasionally lead teams through complex aircraft-related tasks.
