Job Posting Title: AI Pilot & Data Senior Technical Writer

CACI International•Washington, DC
•$70,800 - $148,600•Remote

About The Position

CACI is seeking an experienced AI Pilot & Data Senior Technical Writer to support the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Office of the Inspector General (OIG). The writer turns the work of AI engineers, data engineers, and analysts into clear, accurate documentation for Government decision-makers, reviewers, and future teams. The role produces documentation for OIG AI pilots, including pilot charters, solution designs, validation reports, transition and knowledge-transfer packages, and data dictionaries that will seed the enterprise data catalog on a new data platform. The writer works closely with the AI & Data Use-Case Program Manager, AI engineers, and Government Product Owners to ensure pilots are documented well enough to evaluate, support, and build upon. The position is primarily remote, with on-site work at DHS OIG headquarters in Washington, DC, as requested. Work takes place during core hours of 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM Eastern.

Requirements

  • Associate's degree and 6 years of experience in technical writing or documentation for software, data, or IT systems; equivalencies considered: bachelor's degree and 4 years, or 8 years with no degree.
  • U.S. citizenship and ability to obtain and maintain a DHS Public Trust (High Risk) fitness determination.
  • Demonstrated experience writing technical documentation for software or data systems, such as requirements, design documents, test reports, runbooks, or user guides, based on interviews with engineers and subject matter experts.
  • Experience documenting data, such as data dictionaries, data models, metadata, or catalog entries, including definitions, lineage, and data sensitivity.
  • Experience producing Section 508-conformant documents and working with style guides, templates, and version control in a federal or other regulated environment.
  • Ability to explain complex technical content clearly and accurately for non-technical readers.

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with AI and generative AI concepts, such as model evaluation, output validation, prompts, and retrieval, and documentation practices such as model cards.
  • Experience with data catalog or governance tools such as Unity Catalog, Microsoft Purview, or Collibra, and platforms such as Databricks or Microsoft Azure.
  • Certification such as Certified Professional Technical Communicator (CPTC) or DHS Trusted Tester.
  • Experience with Confluence, SharePoint, Jira, or docs-as-code tools such as Git and Markdown.
  • Background in federal oversight, audit, investigative, law enforcement, or legal documentation, where accuracy and evidentiary standards matter.

Responsibilities

  • Write and maintain pilot charters, requirements, and solution design documents for AI pilot applications, based on discovery sessions, engineering notes, and Government Product Owner input.
  • Document test plans, output validation methods and results, and user acceptance testing outcomes in reports that explain how each pilot was tested and what it can and cannot reliably do.
  • Produce transition-to-sustainment and knowledge-transfer packages, including runbooks, administrator guides, known limitations, and hand-off checklists.
  • Build data dictionaries and data set documentation covering sources, fields, definitions, sensitivity, lineage, data owners and stewards, and approved uses, to seed the enterprise data catalog.
  • Document responsible AI information for each pilot, including intended use, data used, evaluation results, human review steps, and limitations, using a consistent format.
  • Edit technical analyses, decision packages, and recommendations into plain language for non-technical Government leaders while preserving technical accuracy.
  • Interview AI engineers, data engineers, UX researchers, and Government subject matter experts to verify accuracy, and manage reviews and versions through Government acceptance.
  • Apply document standards, templates, and naming conventions, and maintain the document library so deliverables can be found from the service they support.
  • Ensure deliverables meet Section 508 accessibility requirements and handle SPII, Law Enforcement Sensitive, and FOUO information according to DHS and OIG rules.
  • Support quality reviews and contract deliverable timelines, and provide documentation status for monthly progress reports.
