AI/ML Software Development

CACI•Aberdeen Proving Ground, MD
•$115,600 - $254,200

About The Position

CACI is seeking an AI/ML Subject Matter Expert (SME) to support a Department of Defense customer at Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland. The role works closely with Research & Development teams to evaluate, develop, assess, and validate Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning solutions. It includes conducting Independent Verification & Validation (IV&V), analyzing model performance and effectiveness, and preparing objective technical assessments of AI/ML capabilities and limitations. The position emphasizes mathematics, statistics, machine learning theory, and data science. Familiarity with generative AI is desirable, but the primary focus is evaluating and improving AI/ML methodologies rather than AI operations, prompt engineering, or application-level integration alone. The successful candidate will examine internally developed, vendor-provided, and research-partner solutions, assess their strengths and weaknesses, and communicate findings clearly to technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Requirements

  • U.S. citizenship and an active Secret security clearance.
  • One of the following education and experience combinations: a bachelor's degree in Artificial Intelligence, Computer Science, Data Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Applied Mathematics, Operations Research, Computer Engineering, Physics, or a related quantitative discipline and 8+ years of relevant experience; a master's degree in Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Data Science, Statistics, Applied Mathematics, Computer Science, or a related quantitative field and 6+ years of relevant experience; or a PhD in Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Data Science, Statistics, or Applications (the source text ends this qualification here).
  • Strong foundation in mathematics, statistics, machine learning theory, and data science.

  • Evaluate AI/ML models, architectures, and products using quantitative and scientifically rigorous methodologies.
  • Conduct IV&V of AI-enabled systems and assess performance, reliability, robustness, security, explainability, and operational suitability.
  • Generate technical reports, white papers, and recommendations about model effectiveness, limitations, risks, and opportunities for improvement.
  • Work with industry partners through Cooperative Research and Development Agreements (CRADAs) and other collaborative efforts to provide technical feedback on AI/ML products and solutions.
  • Partner with academic researchers and industry organizations to guide research toward mission-relevant applications and measurable outcomes.
  • Assess emerging AI technologies, algorithms, and research developments for applicability to DoD mission requirements.
  • Analyze AI/ML systems for safety, bias, robustness, explainability, and adversarial resilience.
  • Collaborate with software engineers, data scientists, researchers, government stakeholders, and external partners.
  • Participate in code reviews, architecture discussions, technical evaluations, and experimentation efforts.
  • Communicate technical findings and recommendations clearly and objectively to leadership, engineering teams, and customers.
