About The Position

nou Systems, Inc. (nSI) is seeking an AI Engineer to join their Technical Solutions Division and JSTC2 Team in Huntsville, Alabama. This role involves building generative-AI-powered software to provide warfighting training exercise participants with enhanced access to information about unfolding scenarios. The engineer will modernize the interface to warfighting simulations and develop innovative ways to surface critical scenario information to end-users. The team is developing Government Off-the-Shelf software with an existing customer base, ongoing use in warfighting exercises, and a long-term product roadmap. The position requires prototyping new LLM-powered capabilities and integrating them into existing software. The engineer will be part of a multidisciplinary team working on a web-based front end, a large-data-management back end, and on-prem LLM-powered data exploration. The ideal candidate understands the intricacies of LLMs and their application in production code, balancing cutting-edge research with practical, usable software development at a fast pace. Collaboration within an Agile/SAFe team, including developers, architects, QA, and integration/DevOps, is essential, with a strong emphasis on software quality and team cohesion. The role involves delivering capabilities on a 10-week cadence, eliciting end-user needs, and scoping work with incomplete information.

Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in Machine Learning, Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related technical field.
5+ years of professional experience in AI/ML engineering.
2+ years focused on LLMs or similar generative models.
Proficiency in Python + PyTorch.
Proficiency in generative AI frameworks (LangChain, LlamaIndex).
Proficiency in vector databases (ChromaDB).
Experience with software development as an individual contributor without agentic coding support.
Experience with production code: modular, unit tested, supports integration and end-to-end testing, maintained in source control (Git + GitLab).
Experience with Scrum Agile software development, including participation in ceremonies (standup, sprint reviews, Product Increment planning).
Experience with team-focused development: ticket management, constructive peer reviews, backlog management.
Must possess or be able to obtain an active Secret Security Clearance.
U.S. Citizen.

Nice To Haves

Master’s or higher degree preferred.
Experience with newer approaches to using LLMs as a natural language interface to a data store (not just traditional RAG).
Experience with developing MCP tooling for custom applications.
Comfortable developing in a containerized (Docker) Linux-based (Ubuntu) environment.
Experience developing for a Continuous Integration/Continuous Development (CI/CD) pipeline.
Active Top Secret clearance.
