About The Position

As an AI Engineer IV at Premera, you will contribute technical leadership to a team developing AI/ML solutions for complex business problems, from conception through production. You will guide solution design, lead ideation and prototyping of AI products, and apply substantial experience in deploying ML algorithms and software engineering to build reliable, maintainable AI infrastructure. The role also includes mentoring engineers, advancing innovative AI systems, and staying current with AI research and technologies. This is a remote/telecommuter position working from home. You will work with internal teams, leadership, and external stakeholders to develop AI solutions that deliver business value while following AI governance, best practices, and data-quality standards. You will also advise leadership on enterprise AI strategies, technology and infrastructure roadmaps, and contribute thought leadership to Premera’s AI community.

Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Statistics, Mathematics, or a related field, or at least 2 years of experience in a related professional IT/analytics position.
At least 5 years of industry experience developing, deploying, and maintaining AI or ML systems. Up to 2 years of industry experience may be substituted with an AI-centered master’s or Ph.D. or AI Engineering certifications.
Proven experience developing deep learning architectures such as CNNs, transformers, GANs, LSTMs, GNNs, autoencoders, diffusion models, and Neural Ordinary Differential Equations (NODEs).
Proven experience debugging AI systems and improving performance through hyperparameter tuning and similar techniques.
Knowledge of software design patterns, microservices, distributed computing, container orchestration, and related architectures.
Strong software engineering skills and experience building secure, stable software systems at scale.
Experience developing and optimizing ML solutions using languages such as Python and libraries such as NumPy, Pandas, Matplotlib, and scikit-learn.
Familiarity with traditional ML lifecycles.
Familiarity with building minimal interfaces for AI products, such as Streamlit or Shiny.
Proficiency in ethical AI practices, including explainable AI, fairness, and mitigation of bias and hallucinations.
Strong communication, collaboration, and mentorship skills.
Ability to explain technical details and tradeoffs of AI solutions clearly and concisely to nontechnical stakeholders.
Ability to meet the role’s physical requirements: primarily sedentary work, occasional exertion of up to 10 pounds and frequent or constant negligible exertion to move objects, keyboarding, and clear communication in person and by telephone, with or without accommodation.

Nice To Haves

At least 6 years of experience developing deep learning models using TensorFlow, PyTorch, MLX, JAX, or other modern deep learning frameworks; experience with older libraries such as Theano or Caffe is also accepted. Graduate-level education or research experience may supplement this qualification.
Experience with design patterns and microservices architecture, including at least 3 years of container orchestration experience in a production environment.
Knowledge of and experience implementing ethical AI practices, including at least 3 years on projects requiring explainable AI, fairness, and bias mitigation.
At least 3 years of expertise implementing advanced techniques such as Retrieval Augmented Generation, Tree of Thoughts, or Multimodal CoT in prompt-engineering projects; experience leading prompt-engineering teams, conducting code reviews, and setting organizational best practices for prompt engineering.
At least 4 years of experience productionizing AI models, including building scalable data pipelines and establishing robust monitoring systems.
At least 5 years working in Agile-like teams and environments.

Responsibilities

Recommend and develop comprehensive systems and frameworks for AI applications and products.
Pitch concepts to team leadership and lead the development of prototypes and minimum viable products to validate AI/ML solutions.
Assist in designing and implementing cloud architecture for large, multifaceted AI systems.
Assist in designing and scaffolding robust data pipelines for large, complex AI systems.
Develop specifications for low-latency APIs and services used to deploy AI models and integrate them into applications.
Develop code to monitor models and AI systems and ensure consistent, reliable performance.
Participate in a team using principled, agile-like development practices.
Create and maintain thorough documentation consistent with team procedures, corporate policies, and expectations.
Ensure peer review of assigned work and review the work of others as requested.
Guide AI engineers on AI/ML and industry best practices and methodologies.
Keep current with new tools and concepts through reading documentation and literature and actively developing skills.
Advise team and division leadership on enterprise AI strategies, AI technology strategies and roadmaps, and AI infrastructure strategies and roadmaps.
Collaborate with external stakeholders to conceptualize AI solutions that deliver business value and adhere to AI governance, AI best practices, and data-quality standards.
Provide thought leadership to the Premera AI community.
