AI Developer Experience Engineer

PlanetScale
•$170,000 - $220,000

About The Position

PlanetScale is hiring an AI Developer Experience Engineer to own the end-to-end experience of using PlanetScale with AI agents and tools. The role focuses on making PlanetScale available across AI marketplaces, directories, coding tools, and agent platforms; ensuring the MCP server and CLI work reliably across clients; and measuring how well AI agents use and recommend PlanetScale. This is a hands-on role combining engineering, content creation, and public communication. The engineer will work closely with teams responsible for the MCP server, CLI, API, and documentation, while tracking a rapidly changing AI tooling landscape and helping shape how developers use AI with databases and infrastructure. The role also involves creating demonstrations and sample applications, producing documentation and other educational content, and communicating effective practices through videos, conferences, and social channels.

Requirements

  • Daily use of AI coding agents and strong opinions about what makes tools work well with them.
  • Experience building an MCP server, plugin, CLI, or SDK used by real developers.
  • Software engineering background in languages such as TypeScript and Go.
  • Comfort working with APIs, OAuth, and the command line.
  • Experience writing documentation, blog posts, and/or creating video content.
  • Ability to communicate with a broad audience and customers on social media.
  • Experience with relational databases such as Postgres, MySQL, or SQLite, including schema design, migrations, connection handling, and using Postgres or MySQL in production.
  • Data fluency, including designing evaluations, writing queries for dashboards, and distinguishing real trends from noise.
  • Ability to communicate technical ideas clearly in writing, on video, and on stage.
  • Independence and speed in identifying gaps, shipping fixes, and communicating about them.
  • Genuine curiosity about the AI tooling landscape and a habit of keeping up with it.

Nice To Haves

  • Contributions to the MCP specification, SDKs, or popular open-source MCP servers.
  • Experience writing agent skills, plugins, or rules files for Claude Code, Cursor, or Codex.
  • Experience with LLM evaluation tools and building agent benchmarks.
  • Experience with AEO or GEO, or tracking how LLMs surface and recommend a product.
  • A blog, YouTube channel, or GitHub presence that developers already follow.
  • Experience with Vitess, database sharding, or running databases at scale.

Responsibilities

  • Build and maintain PlanetScale plugins across AI marketplaces and directories, including agent plugins, skill registries, MCP directories, IDE extension stores, and AI app builders.
  • Own PlanetScale integrations with AI coding tools, agent frameworks, and platforms.
  • Keep up with new AI tools and ensure customers have a good experience with them from launch.
  • Test the PlanetScale MCP server and CLI across Claude Code, Cursor, Codex, VS Code, and other clients, identifying regressions.
  • Identify and address friction in creating databases, connecting, running migrations, and debugging queries from within an agent.
  • Improve the context agents use, including tool descriptions, skills, llms.txt, agent-oriented documentation, and actionable error messages.
  • Improve answer engine optimization so agents find and recommend PlanetScale.
  • Build and maintain skills for Postgres, MySQL, Vitess, Neki, and PlanetScale.
  • Build evaluations that run real agent tasks against PlanetScale databases.
  • Benchmark agent performance with PlanetScale and work toward continuous improvement.
  • Track whether AI assistants and agents recommend PlanetScale for database questions and whether their descriptions are accurate.
  • Instrument and report on agent usage, including databases created by agents, time to first connection, MCP versus CLI usage, and session failures.
  • Create demos and sample applications showcasing PlanetScale and AI tooling.
  • Write documentation, guides, and blog posts about using databases effectively with AI, including safe access, branching, and performance assessment.
  • Create videos and attend conferences to communicate effective AI development practices to the audience.
