Principal AI Developer Experience Engineer

Atom Computing•Boulder, CO

About The Position

Atom Computing is seeking a Principal AI Developer Experience Engineer to improve how physicists and engineers use AI in their daily work. The role will establish best practices for AI-assisted engineering and build shared tooling that helps teams adopt AI-driven workflows. It will also influence product architecture to extend LLM-driven workflows into areas where hardware, timing, or reliability requirements have traditionally favored conventional methods. The work aims to accelerate experiment analysis, optics development, PCB and FPGA design, and quantum control software development in C++ and Rust. Because the role involves engineering physical systems, it is based on-site in Boulder, Colorado at least three days per week. The engineer will define and maintain practices for AI-assisted development and research; guide safe use of LLMs on performance-critical and embedded systems; improve AI tooling and integrations; measure the outcomes of AI-driven workflows; and help ensure the safe and reliable operation of AI in quantum processors.

Requirements

  • Master’s or PhD in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or Artificial Intelligence.
  • At least 8 years of software development experience.
  • Strong software engineering skills in Python.
  • Experience writing embedded software in C++ or Rust, including manual memory management, hard real-time constraints, and kernel device driver implementation.
  • Experience influencing an organization of more than 50 engineers using AI agents such as Claude Code, Cursor, or GitHub Copilot daily, including identifying pitfalls and measuring impact.
  • Working knowledge of practical LLM behavior, including context management, prompting, agentic workflows, harnesses, effective safety practices, tool use, and judging output quality.
  • Clear written and spoken communication with audiences ranging from physicists to new software hires.
  • Ability to influence a multidisciplinary engineering organization.

Responsibilities

  • Define, document, and maintain best practices for AI-assisted coding, testing, code review, and research workflows.
  • Influence guidelines for using LLMs on performance-critical software, including embedded C++ and Rust, RTOS applications, and kernel device drivers. Establish guidance on appropriate use, review and testing of generated code, and verification of memory safety, timing, and determinism before merge.
  • Make forward-looking architecture improvements to AI tooling and integrations so they keep pace with advances in models and agents and changes in engineers’ tool preferences.
  • Track industry benchmarks for AI-assisted developer productivity and keep organizational practices current.
  • Build ways to measure AI and LLM-driven workflow outcomes, including defect and revert rates, review findings, test coverage, performance regressions, new capabilities, and time saved; use results to refine tools and guidelines.
  • Ensure safe and reliable operation of AI in quantum processors.

Benefits

  • Fully paid medical, dental, and vision insurance for employees and their dependents.
  • Unlimited paid time off.
  • 401(k) company matching.
  • Short- and long-term disability coverage.
  • Flexible spending account (FSA) and dependent care benefits.
  • Life insurance.
  • Drinks, snacks, and catered team lunches in the offices every day.
  • Annual bonus.
  • Equity in the company.
