About The Position

The Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation is responsible for the policies, legislation, regulations, programs, and services that enable Alberta’s agriculture and food sectors to flourish and contribute to Alberta’s economic recovery and growth. The ministry’s role is diverse, ranging from food safety and industry growth and diversification to increasing investment and supporting growth in rural Alberta. The ministry also supports foundational programs like irrigation and agricultural societies that help create strong rural communities and resilient agriculture sectors. We are seeking a strategic and highly motivated Agri-Environmental Analyst who brings a unique blend of policy expertise, environmental understanding, and agricultural knowledge. In this role, you will analyze provincial and federal legislation, regulations, and policy initiatives, assess their impacts on agricultural and environmental outcomes, and provide succinct, high-quality advice to senior decision-makers under tight timelines. The ideal candidate is an exceptional writer and critical thinker who can quickly process information, navigate complex policy environments, understand the realities and priorities of Alberta producers, and balance environmental objectives with practical agricultural considerations. Experience developing briefing notes, cabinet materials, and policy recommendations in a fast-paced government environment will be highly valued.

Requirements

Four-year university degree in a related field (environmental science, environmental studies, agriculture, public policy or related) from an accredited Canadian post-secondary institution or from a post-secondary institution outside of Canada that has been assessed as equivalent by the Government of Alberta International Qualification Assessment Service or equivalent educational assessment service.
Four years of progressively responsible related experience in agri-environmental policy development or agriculture; or equivalent.
Experience writing documents (e.g., briefing notes/papers) for senior decision-makers that summarize an issue, identify key information, and provide options/recommendations.

Knowledge and/or experience with agri-environmental issues in Alberta.
Knowledge and/or experience with agricultural practices and equipment in Alberta.
Demonstrated proficiency in project management.

Responsibilities

Lead research, analysis, and policy development on agri-environmental issues affecting Alberta agriculture. Provide strategic advice, identify emerging trends and risks, assess government initiatives, conduct jurisdictional and policy reviews, and develop recommendations to support environmental stewardship, producer competitiveness, and effective program outcomes.
Support the development, evaluation, and modernization of agri-environmental programs. Analyze program performance, stakeholder feedback, and industry trends to identify improvements, strengthen program effectiveness and accessibility, and inform future policy frameworks, funding models, and program renewal initiatives.
Assist with the delivery and administration of agri-environmental funding programs by reviewing applications and claims, assessing eligibility and compliance, supporting quality assurance processes, and ensuring programs are delivered fairly, consistently, and in accordance with established guidelines and service standards.
Build and maintain collaborative relationships with producers, industry organizations, researchers, and government partners. Engage stakeholders to gather input, identify priorities and emerging issues, and support evidence-based policy development, program design, implementation, and evaluation.
Provide clear, accurate, and timely information to applicants and funding recipients regarding program requirements, processes, and eligibility. Support the development of communication materials and outreach resources that promote transparent, consistent, and client-focused program delivery.
