The Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA) owns, operates, and maintains eight major toll facilities across the State of Maryland. The Environmental Scientist within the Office of Environmental, Safety & Risk Management (OESRM) performs professional environmental compliance and program management activities to ensure organizational compliance with federal, state, and local environmental laws, regulations, and policies. This role serves as the subject matter expert on environmental compliance programs, including air and water quality, hazardous materials and waste management, fuel oil storage tanks, spill prevention and response, recycling, indoor air quality, asbestos and lead-based paint management, and environmental audits. The position conducts facility inspections, environmental evaluations, and construction project reviews to identify compliance issues, recommend corrective actions, and ensure adherence to regulatory requirements and project specifications. Additionally, they provide environmental guidance and training to employees, contractors, and external stakeholders; oversee environmental consultants and review technical deliverables for quality and accuracy; support the implementation of the Environmental Management System (EMS); and prepare reports documenting findings, recommendations, and compliance status.
