About The Position

The LEAPS Sentry is responsible for helping to maintain order and for protecting the well-being of students, staff, and visitors during program hours. This role requires adherence to NYS Office of Children and Family Services (OCFS) licensing requirements, including fingerprinting, background screening, and clearance on the State Central Register (SCR) and Statewide Central Register of Child Abuse and Maltreatment (SCL) within the first 30 days of employment. A medical statement and tuberculin test are also required prior to assignment. Requirements

  • Previous experience working with children under 13 years of age.
  • Brings to this position maturity, responsibility and a sincere interest in working with people.
  • Possesses a general knowledge and understanding of the YMCA, its goals, and its mission.
  • Ability to work in an environment where flexibility and patience are often required.
  • Prior to assignment to initial position, the incumbent will complete an initial medical statement and tuberculin test providing satisfactory evidence that they are physically fit to provide child day care.
  • Within the first 30-days of employment, the incumbent will undergo fingerprint and background screening as mandated by the NYS OCFS.
  • Within the first 30-days of employment, the incumbent will obtain clearance on the State Central Register (SCR) and Statewide Central Register of Child Abuse and Maltreatment (SCL).
  • Must complete annual safety, combating sexual harassment, and child abuse prevention trainings assigned by human resources prior to direct service.
  • Must hold Medication Administration Certification or successfully complete no later than 90 days after employment begins.
  • Be responsible for completing a minimum of 30 hours of training every 2 years with the first 15 hours being received within the first 6 months of employment as required by the NYS Office of Children and Family Services.

Responsibilities

  • Models the YMCA core values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility.
  • Develops and maintains positive relationships with individuals and groups at all levels of the organization; supporting members connect with each other and the YMCA.
  • Maintains physical presence, always remains alert while on duty.
  • Knows and reviews all emergency procedures and responds to emergency situations immediately in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures; completes related reports as required.
  • Familiarizes oneself with the YMCA School Age Child Care objectives and considers these objectives in delivery of services.
  • Provides protection of students, faculty and support service personnel.
  • Maintains order in school hallways and cafeteria.
  • Intervenes directly to control disturbances among students.
  • Reports to the supervisor, by radio receiver-transmitter or telephone, any emergency situations that may require police assistance.
  • Completes, or assists in completion, of incident reports.
  • Attends orientation and in-service training sessions relative to rules, regulations policies, first aid, conflict resolution and human relations.
  • Observes and follows the YMCA School Age Child Care program guidelines as well as the regulations set forth by the NYS Office of Children and Family Services.
  • Reports to the program ready to work at designated times and prepared to stay until all of the children have left.
  • Provides a safe, healthy, moral, and fun environment for all children.
  • Assists with behavior management of program participants using positive techniques of guidance, redirection, reinforcement, and encouragement of age-appropriate expectations.
  • Sets up guidelines and environments that minimize the need for discipline and provides steps towards progressive discipline as needed.
  • Provides a positive role model for the children in the program, including actions, speech, and attire.
  • Fosters within the program participants the growth of the four YMCA character values of respect, responsibility, caring, and honesty.
  • Fosters the growth of skills in team-building, good sportsmanship, friendship, and pride in doing one’s best.
  • Assists with supervision of snack, dismissal, and other program transitions as assigned.
  • Assists with maintaining staff sign-in logs, visitor sign-in logs, and other related records on a daily basis.
  • Follows the Syracuse City School District's Code of Conduct at all times.
  • Assists in conducting monthly fire drills, shelter in place drills and daily health checks as required by OCFS.
  • Maintains a positive, open relationship with all staff, parents, and program participants.
  • Attends all scheduled staff meetings and trainings/workshops (for both the YMCA and SACC clearance requirements).
  • Hands in completed time sheets on a bi-weekly basis.
  • Performs other responsibilities as assigned by the supervisor.
