About The Position

The Syracuse City School District is seeking certified teachers, highly qualified teaching assistants, or degreed individuals to work directly with students in its dynamic Before/After-School Programs. These programs are extensions of learning aligned with the District’s mission to honor diversity, foster joyful, safe, and inclusive environments, and hold high expectations for teaching and learning. The role involves facilitating group activities, creating lesson plans for in-person and/or virtual delivery, providing individual attention, and fostering strong relationships to positively influence children's lives. This position offers extensions for qualified staff for up to 15 hours per week, running for approximately 90-107 program days according to an after-school calendar. The program aims to inspire girls to build self-esteem, develop life skills, model responsibility and integrity, and master strategies for dealing with peer pressure and conflict. Participants will utilize SCSD resources, engage in group activities, receive focused individual attention, and foster strong relationships. The program will also infuse sports/movement and involve community service projects and mentoring events. The after-school program is led by a designated SCSD Program Lead and supervised by a SCSD Building Administrator.

Requirements

NYS Certified Teacher (preferred)
NYS Certified Teaching Assistant OR Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with a Baccalaureate Degree
Ability to inspire all girls to lay the foundation for their future by building self-esteem and developing foundation skills necessary for life success.
Ability to model and mentor responsibility, wisdom, integrity, and self-control and master strategies to combat peer pressure, deal with conflict and ensure that relationships stay in the healthy zone.
Ability to utilize resources provided by the SCSD such as “Capturing the Vision”.
Ability to facilitate group activities, provide focused individual attention and foster strong relationships that positively influence young women’s lives.
Ability to infuse sports and/or movement component into program.
Ability to participate in community service projects and mentoring events.
Interested in serving Syracuse City students in an after-school setting at one of the 26 after-school programs.

Responsibilities

Provide classroom instruction (in-person and/or virtual pending State guidelines) to program participants during the after-school program.
Create daily class lesson plans and submit to the Program’s Lead Teacher in advance of lesson delivery.
Provide high quality, project-based, academic classes aligned to grade-level curriculum and the Next Generation Learning Standards to include services such as; academic instruction in ELA, math and science, intervention and acceleration models, tutorial through SCSD approved teacher models, and interactive project-based learning.
Create a classroom (in-person and/or virtual) environment that is conducive to learning and grade-level appropriate.
Guide the learning process toward the achievement of the program goals and objectives as provided by the Program Lead.
Employ instructional methods and materials that are most appropriate for meeting lesson objectives.
Follow all school, after-school, and classroom (in-person and/or virtual) procedures.
Incorporate SCSD day and after-school social emotional learning strategies (where appropriate).
Maintain a neat and orderly classroom, being respectful of day school teacher’s classroom and SCSD property.
Attend mandatory professional development training when offered.
Complete annual staff survey.
Deliver instruction in-person and/or virtual and use classroom management strategies aligned with the SCSD’s Code of Conduct, Character and Supports.
