About The Position

The YWCA of the City of New York (YWCA NYC) is a social justice organization dedicated to eliminating racism, empowering women, and promoting peace, justice, freedom, and dignity for all. They offer after-school programs for elementary and middle school students, focusing on youth development and social change. The Group Leader oversees the development and engagement of students in the after-school program, ensuring their safety and well-being while supporting their academic, physical, social, and emotional growth. This role requires a positive youth-development approach, effective communication with students, families, and colleagues, and a commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and anti-racism.

Requirements

  • 2+ years working in after-school programs or other education/youth programs
  • GED, High School Diploma and enrolled in college
  • Effective behavioral management skills
  • Knowledge of anti-racism and gender equity principles and practices
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills
  • Computer skills: knowledge of email platforms, SharePoint and Microsoft Office suite products (Outlook, TEAMS, Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Strong in math, reading, and other general academic studies
  • Strong work ethic and professional values
  • Commitment to promoting YW-NYC’s social justice mission and educational and youth development philosophy

Responsibilities

  • Lead homework help classroom and support students with tutoring using recognized learning standards.
  • Run group dynamic games and SEL activities.
  • Collaborate in the implementation of STEM activities in the literacy-based arts curricula.
  • Create a positive, engaging learning environment through effective classroom management.
  • Engage students during all program activities; assist and support specialists in program facilitation.
  • Ensure program activities align with DYCD COMPASS and SONYC requirements and organizational goals.
  • Ensure curriculum aligns with youth development principles, program goals, and student interests.
  • Adapt curriculum and teaching strategies to meet the diverse learning needs and abilities of participants.
  • Prepare participants to showcase skills at culminating events or special programs in partnership with school staff.
  • Supervise and ensure the safety and welfare of students, including during field trips or activities outside of program site.
  • Keep students engaged and create a classroom culture of respect and participation.
  • Maintain accurate attendance for assigned students.
  • Align program practices with the YWCA-NYC Mission and values.
  • Communicate with parents and DOE teachers regarding student's progress in the program.
  • Make referrals to Art Therapist, Inclusion Coordinators, Social Work Interns, as needed.
  • Regularly check emails and respond in a timely manner, at least within 24 hours.
  • Submit required program documentation on time.
  • Maintain accurate record keeping (daily attendance, incident reports, behavior notes, etc).
  • Complete 130 hours of mandated professional development.
  • Support field trips, community-building events, and other enrichment opportunities to enhance program impact.
  • Organize family engagement events.
  • Participate in events to recruit and retain program participants.
  • Participate in agency wide events.
  • Any other duties as assigned.
