About The Position

The Afterschool Director is responsible for the overall management, implementation, and continuous improvement of the Hennigan K2–6 school-run afterschool program. Working closely with school leadership, the Director helps ensure that the program provides safe, engaging, and inclusive afterschool experiences that promote enrichment, positive youth development, and student success. The Director provides leadership for program planning and implementation, supervises and develops afterschool staff, supports child care voucher enrollment and compliance with Massachusetts Department of Early Education and Care (EEC) requirements, and manages the daily operations of the program. The Director collaborates with school staff and other program personnel to ensure that the afterschool program aligns with the school's goals and complements the instructional day.

Requirements

  • Minimum of three years of leadership experience in afterschool, out-of-school time, or youth development programs serving elementary-aged children.
  • Demonstrated experience supervising and developing staff.
  • Experience managing program operations, including scheduling, enrollment, and compliance responsibilities.
  • Knowledge of child development and effective practices in youth development and out-of-school time programming.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrated competency working with families of different socio-economic and cultural backgrounds.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with facilitators, families, and community partners.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a dynamic environment.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor's degree in Education, Youth Development, Human Services, or a related field.
  • Experience with Massachusetts Department of Early Education and Care (EEC), including voucher administration and regulatory compliance.
  • Previous work experience in Boston Public Schools.
  • Experience managing program budgets.
  • Proficiency in Spanish or Haitian Creole.

Responsibilities

  • Work with school leadership to establish the vision, goals, and overall design of the afterschool program, including curriculum, enrichment, homework support, and the daily program schedule.
  • Collaborate with school leadership and staff to ensure that afterschool programming complements and extends students' learning and development.
  • Ensure equitable access to high-quality afterschool programming for all students, including students with disabilities and multilingual learners.
  • Evaluate program quality and implement continuous improvements based on observations, staff feedback, and program outcomes.
  • Serve as the on-site administrator during afterschool hours, responding to program needs, implementing emergency procedures, and supporting staff with student behavior as needed.
  • Supervise, support, and evaluate afterschool staff.
  • Conduct regular observations and provide coaching to support high-quality programming.
  • Plan and lead staff orientation, meetings, and ongoing professional development.
  • Assist with the recruitment, hiring, and onboarding of afterschool staff.
  • Develop weekly staffing plans and coordinate substitute coverage.
  • Foster a collaborative, inclusive, and positive team culture.
  • Lead outreach to families who may be eligible for EEC child care vouchers and support them through the enrollment process.
  • With support from BPS Central Office, serve as the school-based liaison to the Massachusetts Department of Early Education and Care (EEC) regarding voucher administration and compliance.
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable EEC licensing, voucher, health, safety, and documentation requirements.
  • Maintain required student, staff, and program records in accordance with EEC regulations.
  • Manage the daily operations of the afterschool program, including scheduling, supplies, materials, and facility use.
  • Oversee the program budget in collaboration with school leadership.
  • Coordinate with school staff to ensure classrooms and shared spaces are prepared and restored following program activities.
  • Review and approve staff time records and complete required payroll documentation.
  • Oversee program fee collection, including invoicing and follow-up with families, as needed.
  • Collaborate with school-based staff to ensure coordination between the afterschool program and other school initiatives.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
