About The Position

Amentum is hiring an Aerodynamics Engineer for the JETSII contract, supporting NASA’s deep space exploration efforts. The role applies expertise in Earth-entry and abort aerodynamics to human-rated spacecraft, including computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis, grid generation, visualization, and interpretation of ground-test and flight data. The engineer performs detailed aerodynamic analyses across a wide range of flight regimes and carries out other duties as required. The role typically requires a bachelor's degree in engineering and may require a related master's degree or higher, along with 15 or more years of related experience. Candidates should have expertise spanning subsonic through hypersonic flight regimes, experience with a NASA aerodynamics CFD solver, and expertise in entry and abort vehicles. The position requires strong communication and the ability to work with NASA civil servants and contractor employees. The work is generally performed in an office, though tasks may involve inside or outside work. Work may require sitting or standing for extended periods and lifting or carrying up to 25 pounds. Regular attendance is critical, and the employee may need to work outside the normal schedule or adjust hours during peak periods and surge requirements.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering; a related master's degree or higher may be expected.
  • Typically, at least 15 years of related experience.
  • Expertise in aerodynamics across subsonic through hypersonic flight regimes.
  • Experience with a NASA aerodynamics CFD solver, such as CART3D, FUN3D, or OVERFLOW.
  • Expertise in entry and abort vehicles, including aerodynamics, trajectories, loads, and performance analysis.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to work in a team environment with NASA civil servants and contractor employees.
  • Must be able to complete a U.S. government background investigation.
  • Proof of U.S. citizenship or U.S. permanent residency may be required.

Nice To Haves

  • Ph.D. in mechanical or aerospace engineering.
  • Expertise in interpreting ground-test and flight data.
  • Experience with CFD database management and post-processing automation for downstream products.
  • Experience with CFD visualization tools such as Tecplot, Fieldview, or ParaView.
  • Experience with CFD grid-generation software such as Pointwise or HyperMesh.
  • Experience with wind-tunnel testing.
  • Experience extracting aerodynamic data from flight testing.
  • Experience automating analyses with programming tools such as Fortran and Python.
  • Experience with modern software best practices, such as software repositories and CI/CD.

Responsibilities

  • Apply knowledge of Earth-entry and abort aerodynamics to human-rated spacecraft.
  • Use aerodynamic CFD solvers for spacecraft entry analyses.
  • Create CFD grids using grid-generation software such as Pointwise or Chimera Grid Tools.
  • Create CFD visualizations using tools such as Tecplot, Fieldview, or ParaView.
  • Analyze and interpret ground-test and flight data from aerodynamic and aerothermal perspectives.
  • Perform detailed aerodynamic analyses across a wide range of flight regimes.
  • Perform other duties as required.
