About The Position

The Division of Undergraduate Education and Student Success (UESS) is dedicated to promoting academic excellence, universal access, engagement, and achievement for all undergraduate students at the University of Oregon. UESS provides essential resources and services that foster persistence, enhance academic performance, and guide students toward timely graduation. The Accessible Education Center (AEC), a part of UESS, specifically focuses on facilitating and supporting access and inclusion for students with disabilities by coordinating services, determining accommodations, providing advocacy, and collaborating with various campus stakeholders to create accessible environments. Access Advisors are integral to this mission, working within a team to ensure the full inclusion of students with disabilities into the university environment through proactive advising, collaboration with faculty and staff, and driving systemic campus change. They function as accessibility specialists and case managers, supporting students with diverse needs including mental health, chronic health conditions, learning disabilities, and ADHD. Access Advisors collaborate with instructors and campus entities to ensure reasonable accommodations and universal design principles are considered, and may deliver presentations to students, parents, and university employees. They also have opportunities to coordinate and participate in AEC projects. This role operates in a fast-paced office setting, providing year-round advising and accommodation guidance, and requires the ability to work with diverse students facing various challenges, including crisis or scholastic difficulty. The position emphasizes professionalism, collegiality, cultural humility, and agility in a team environment, aiming to create a welcoming, inclusive, and accessible atmosphere.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree and two years of experience providing advising or counseling in education, counseling, social work/behavioral support, or college/university environment.
  • Experience advising, counseling, teaching or otherwise working with young adults with disabilities; OR Master's degree in counseling, social work, psychology, higher education, or related field; AND Experience advising, counseling, teaching, or otherwise working with young adults with disabilities.
  • Understanding of issues facing diverse groups (e.g. low-socioeconomic, first generation, students with disabilities, underrepresented students of color, non-traditional, and under-prepared individuals).
  • Strong communication skills.
  • High-level organizational skills with the ability to prioritize and multi-task effectively in a fast-paced, detail oriented and time sensitive environment.
  • Diligent attention to details and pursuit of quality in accomplishing tasks.
  • Ability to recognize situations that warrant initiative and move forward without hesitation; resolving issues, problems, or situations.
  • Ability to anticipate next steps and execute independently.
  • Proficiency with MS Office Suite (or similar). Ability to produce professional correspondence, documents, data reports, and presentations.
  • Ability to work collegially and collaboratively with diverse internal and external constituencies.
  • Knowledge of university policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of universal/inclusive design concepts and experience with implementation.
  • Working knowledge of ADA and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act.

Nice To Haves

  • Master's degree in counseling, social work, psychology, education, or related field.
  • Experience working on issues of access and inclusion to effect meaningful change and promote student success.
  • Specialized expertise in at least one disability area, preferably mental health.
  • Experience working effectively with university teaching faculty and administrators.

Responsibilities

  • Facilitate access and full inclusion of students with disabilities into the university environment.

  • Function as accessibility specialists and case managers, working with students presenting with mental health or chronic health situations, learning disabilities, ADHD, head injury, etc.
  • Collaborate and problem-solve with instructors and other campus entities to ensure reasonable accommodations are provided and universal design solutions are considered.
  • Give presentations to students, parents, and university employees.
  • Coordinate and participate in AEC projects.
  • Deliver advising support and accommodation guidance in a fast-paced office setting year-round.
  • Work with diverse students presenting with a range of disability experiences and related challenges including crisis or scholastic difficulty.
  • Support the university’s emphasis on academic excellence in a culturally diverse and academically challenging learning environment.
  • Exhibit professionalism and collegiality in a team environment.
