About The Position

The ACLU of Indiana is a nonpartisan organization dedicated to protecting and expanding civil liberties and civil rights across the state. Through integrated legal, policy, advocacy, communications, and operational strategies, we work to dismantle systemic inequities and uphold constitutional protections—centering communities most impacted by injustice and advancing lasting, structural change. The Advocacy Specialist supports the implementation of ACLU of Indiana’s advocacy strategies by engaging communities, partners, and stakeholders across the state. This role helps translate organizational priorities into meaningful civic engagement, coalition-building, and public-facing advocacy efforts. Working under the direction of the Advocacy Manager, the Advocacy Specialist collaborates works to advance civil liberties through nonpartisan advocacy, education, and community engagement.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent professional experience.
  • Two or more years of experience in advocacy, organizing, community engagement, or a related field.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to engage diverse audiences respectfully and effectively.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines, and work effectively under pressure.
  • Willingness to work some evenings and weekends as needed and to travel throughout Indiana.
  • Commitment to nonpartisan advocacy and the mission and values of the ACLU.
  • Ability to work effectively with people from diverse racial, religious, and national backgrounds.

Responsibilities

  • Support statewide advocacy campaigns at the state levels, including proactive and responsive advocacy initiatives.
  • Build subject-matter familiarity with assigned issue areas and serve as a resource to staff and partners.
  • Engage with community members, coalition partners, and stakeholders to build relationships and support shared advocacy goals.
  • Represent the ACLU of Indiana at community meetings, public events, trainings, and forums throughout the state.
  • Support advocacy events, rallies, and public actions, including logistical coordination and on-site engagement.
  • Assist with research, tracking, and reporting related to advocacy campaigns and legislative activity.
  • Coordinate with Communications staff to support advocacy-related messaging and outreach.
  • Support volunteer engagement efforts, including outreach, coordination, and training support.
  • Perform other advocacy-related duties as assigned.
