About The Position

The purpose of this job is to provide educational guidance and assistance for students by developing meaningful educational plans compatible with their career goals. This is accomplished through a consistent and continuous process built on frequent, accumulated personal contacts. The position also serves as a resource for faculty and staff and contributes to the success of the college through contributions to the strategic plan for the department and the college.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • A minimum of 2 years in higher education in a related field such as advising, counseling, career services
  • Proficiency in the use of electronic information systems.
  • Good public relations skills.
  • Good problem solving skills.
  • Good critical thinking skills.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision to establish goals and objectives and set work priorities.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Understanding of federal laws governing student privacy.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing, with students, faculty, and staff
  • Able to engage in the mission, vision, and values of the College

Responsibilities

  • Advising facilitates student academic success, major selection, career development, and personal enrichment, through one-on-one, student focused interactions. Advising emphasizes theoretical and practical methods of inquiry, guided reflection, engagement, assessment, and analysis. Advisors assist students with understanding the analysis of their academic progress, the graduation plan for their major (including all course requirements), audits, how to navigate college procedures, and effects of changing a major in order to ensure completion of their degrees.
  • Advising supports the execution of a comprehensive and holistic program where students increase their personal agency and critical thinking skills, and apply both to their life choices in college and beyond. Advisors counsel students with academic difficulties, those contemplating withdrawal, and those at an academic crossroads. They provide relational advising for at-risk students, academic coaching, and resource referrals as needed. Advisors provide career guidance to assist students in self-evaluation and choosing a major in relation to their career and life goals.
  • Collaborate and maintain positive working relationships with individuals and departments across the college to facilitate the retention of students. Collaborations may be for the purposes of timely referrals to student success services, to provide information and serve as a resource on program questions to students, parents, faculty, and staff.
  • Provide support to the ESOL student population. Work collaboratively with the Academic program coordinator for English as a Second Language courses. Provide training and information to Advisors both professional and Faculty related to ESOL curriculum, testing and programs.
  • Support the Rocky Top Transfer program. Provide guidance and information to participants and interested parties. Other duties as assigned to fulfill the strategic priorities and mission of the College.
