About The Position

Shriners Children's St. Louis is seeking a PRN Advanced Practice Provider (Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant) to provide weekend coverage for its inpatient pediatric orthopedic service. The position supports continuity of care for hospitalized patients and works within a collaborative multidisciplinary team caring for children with orthopedic and rehabilitation needs. The inpatient population is generally low acuity, averaging approximately 3 to 5 patients per day, and includes pediatric orthopedic and rehabilitation patients, including children in HALO traction and those recovering from orthopedic procedures. The APP manages the inpatient unit during designated coverage periods, including patient assessment, implementation of treatment plans, care coordination, discharge planning, and family education. Weekend coverage opportunities include Friday daytime, Friday overnight call, Saturday daytime, Saturday overnight call, Sunday daytime, and Sunday overnight call. Coverage periods are structured as 12-hour shifts from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Friday daytime coverage is onsite, while Friday night coverage is call-based. On Saturdays and Sundays, the provider rounds on assigned inpatients in the morning, collaborates with the pediatrician and care team on treatment plans, addresses clinical concerns, and remains available by phone for the rest of the shift. The APP must be able to report to the hospital within 30 minutes when an in-person evaluation or intervention is needed. The role requires an experienced provider able to practice independently while collaborating with the broader care team. Newly hired APPs complete a structured orientation of approximately 20 weekday shifts and 10 weekend day shifts alongside an experienced pediatrician. Orientation provides exposure to the patient population, inpatient workflows, clinical protocols, and weekend coverage expectations specific to Shriners Children's St. Louis. The position is compensated at a fixed PRN rate of $62.42 per hour and offers scheduling flexibility.
