About The Position

Shriners Children's St. Louis is seeking a PRN Advanced Practice Provider (Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant) to provide weekend coverage for its inpatient pediatric orthopedic service. The role helps ensure continuity of care for hospitalized children, primarily pediatric orthopedic and rehabilitation patients, including children in HALO traction and those recovering from orthopedic procedures. The average daily census is approximately 3 to 5 patients. The APP manages the inpatient unit during designated coverage periods, including patient assessment, implementation of treatment plans, care coordination, discharge planning, and family education. The provider works with pediatricians, orthopedic surgeons, nursing staff, therapists, and other members of the multidisciplinary care team. Coverage periods are structured as 12-hour shifts (7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.). Friday daytime coverage is onsite; Friday night coverage is call-based. On Saturdays and Sundays, the APP rounds on assigned inpatients each morning, collaborates on treatment plans, addresses clinical concerns, and remains available by phone for the remainder of the shift. The APP must be able to respond to urgent needs and report to the hospital within 30 minutes when an in-person evaluation or intervention is required. The position requires an experienced provider able to practice independently while collaborating effectively with the care team. Newly hired APPs complete a structured orientation of approximately 20 weekday shifts and 10 weekend day shifts alongside an experienced pediatrician. The orientation covers the patient population, inpatient workflows, clinical protocols, and weekend coverage expectations. The fixed PRN rate is $62.42 per hour.
